As part of the effort to improve quality education in his constituency, the Member of Parliament for Akan in the Oti Region, Hon Yao Gomado, on Monday, 1st November 2021, joined forces with Pencil of Promise, a philanthropist organization to cut sod for the construction of two separate school projects in the constituency.

The projects are been constructed at Dunpa and Pepesu communities to provide classrooms for Kindergartens to boost basic education in the respective areas.

The projects come as great relief for pupils, teachers and the residents of the deprived schools which are suffering from inadequate infrastructure and furniture. 

About 80 per cent of the projects are been funded by Pencil of Promise, the philanthropist Organisation based in Ho, in the Volta Region, while the remaining 20 per cent is to be funded by the MP together with the communities.

HON GOMADO CUT SOD

At a short but impressive separate ceremony to cut sod for the two projects, Hon Gomado reiterated his commitment to providing quality education in the constituency so that children of school-going age could have access to school not suffer the fate of some of them in years ago in accessing education.

He explained that he had to call on the philanthropic institution since his share of the MP’s Common Fund would not be able to finance the project. 

The MP was hopeful the projects when completed would contribute to the improvement of the academic performance of the pupils.

He however urged residents of the beneficiary communities to avail themselves to provide labour support for the projects as part of their contribution to their children education in the communities.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Kadjebi Municipal Assembly, Hon Wilson Agbanyo commended the MP and the Pencil of Promise for the projects.

He said even though it is the duty of the government to provide resources for education infrastructure, stakeholders in the communities have a role to play to augment the government effort in providing adequate infrastructure.

While advising the contractors that would be working on the projects to do quality work and also strive to complete them within the scheduled period, Hon Agbanyo also entreated residents of the beneficiary communities to give the contractors the needed support and cooperation to facilitate their early completion.

On his part, the Country Director of Pencils of Promise, Mr Freeman Gobah, listed four other schools in the Kadjebi Municipality where the organisation had constructed classroom blocks.

He explained that they would be compelled to move to the rural area in Kadjebi to help equally deprived schools in the future, emphasising that the projects for the Dunpa and Pepesu communities would be furnished with water reservoirs, desks, chairs for the kindergarten and tables and chairs for teachers. 

He assured his organisation’s commitment to improving education in the Volta, Oti and parts of the Eastern Regions and outlined their efforts to simplify the new educational curriculum for teachers. 

The Project Manager of Pencil of Promise, Mr Anthony Quashigah urged artisans in the respective communities to volunteer with their experts to support the organisation to deliver.

The traditional chiefs of the two communities commended the MP for working to improve education conditions in the area, stressing that the many development initiatives proved that the MP was fulfilling his promise to the people.

They urged the contractors that would be working on the projects to recruit their workers from the area as means of providing employment for the youth in the area.
