A man in his late 70s has killed his 27-year-old son in Kajelo in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region.

Ane Apejona is alleged to have quarreled with his son, Ayaga Apejona, who is mentally challenged, over the ownership of wood he (the father) used to construct a canopy.

In the course of the misunderstanding, the father allegedly went and fetched his single barrel hunting gun from his room and shot the son dead.

The incident which happened around 1600 hours on Sunday (14 November), has since left the Kajelo community in shock.

The assemblyman for the area, Hilary Aniakwo who gave further details of the shooting incident told Asaase News residents heard a gunshot and rushed to the scene to find the victim lying in a pool of blood.

He said the suspect after the act handed himself to the Paga district police where he was arrested and together with the police proceeded to the scene of the crime.

“I was at Paga somewhere around 3 pm – 4 pm, then one of the government-appointed assembly members called me that they heard gunshots close to my electoral area. So they rushed there and learnt a man called Ane Apejona was having a quarrel with the son and the man went inside and picked his locally made gun – the type of gun we use for hunting and shot the son.

“The man reported himself to the police after the act and the police asked that he should go back with them to the house to retrieve the gun,” he told Asaase News’s correspondent Senyalah Castro.

He said a careful examination of the body revealed a gunshot wound on the victim’s chest.

As at the time of filing this report, personnel of the Paga police command were at the scene investigating the matter. The weapon had been retrieved for evidential purposes.

The lifeless body of the victim was being conveyed to the War Memorial Hospital in Navrongo for autopsy and preservation.
