The Member of Parliament for Krachi East Hon Wisdom Gidisu has dragged the Minister of Roads and Highways, Hon Kwesi Amoako-Atta to parliament over bad roads in the constituency, making transportation very difficult for residents.

According to him, the condition of the roads have worsened during the rainy season making the transportation of goods and services very cumbersome.

He added that the non –commitment to the construction of key rural road projects in parts of the Constituency were enough reason(s) that the government was careless about the well-being of the people.

Hon Gidisu made this comment after he had summoned the Minister of Roads and Highways to parliament on Friday, November 12, 2021, over bad roads in some of the communities within the Constituency.

The MP wanted to know from the Minister for Roads and highways when work would start to construct feeder roads in some of the rural farming communities at Adonkwanta – Dadoto, Adonkwanta – Katanga Tornu ,  Matamanu,Betinase , Bidi– Sikeli, Kpogede – Azizakpoe  and  Ayiremu – Adiembra.

“Mr. Speaker, I rise to ask the Minister for Roads and Highways when the feeder roads in the following communities in the Krachi East Municipality will be reconstructed and tarred for easy transportation of goods and services: (i) Adonkwanta – Dadoto (ii) Adonkwanta – Katanga Tornu (iii) Matamanu (iv) Betinase (v) Bidi – Sikeli (vi) Kpogede – Azizakpoe (vii) Ayiremu – Adiembra,” Hon Gidisu asked.

In response, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako Atta said the 7.5km road is a gravel road in fair surface condition and is links from Adonkwanta to Dadoto at the banks of the Volta Lake.

According to him, currently, there are no major works but engineering studies will be conducted on the road during the first quarter of 2022 to determine the appropriate intervention to be carried out on the road, adding that, the implementation of the works will be considered under the 2023 budget.

The Adonkwanta–Kantanga Tornu road is 5.6km. It is a gravel road in poor condition and located in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region.

There is no major programme on the road. Future Programme Engineering studies will be conducted on the road during the first quarter of 2022 to determine the appropriate intervention to be carried out on the road. The implementation of the works will be considered under the 2023 budget. (iii) Matamanu Background The Matamanu road is identified on the DFR database as Beposo – Matamanu feeder road (11.4km).

 It is a gravel road in poor condition and located in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region. [19] Current Programme There is no major programme on the road.

The implementation of the works will be considered under the 2023 budget. (iv) Betinase Background The Betinase road is identified on the DFR database as Betinase Jn – Betinase (12.0km) feeder road. It is an engineered road in fair condition and located in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region.

The implementation of the works will be considered under the 2023 budget. (v) Bidi –Sikeli Background The Bidi – Sikeli road is 1.0km and un-engineered. It forms part of the Bidi Jn – Bidi – Sikeli feeder road of a total length of 6.45km.

The Bidi Jn – Bidi (5.45km) section is engineered and in fair condition whiles the Bidi – Sikeli section is un-engineered in poor condition. It is located in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region. Current Programme There is no major programme on the road. [20] Future Programme Engineering studies will be conducted on the road during the first quarter of 2022 to determine the appropriate intervention to be carried out on the road.

The implementation of the works will be considered under the 2023 budget. (vi) Kpogede –Azizakpoe Background The Kpogede – Azizakpoe road is identified on DFR road database as Kotokugyani – Azikope feeder road (12.6km). It is a partially engineered road in poor condition and located in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region. Current Programme Contract for the rehabilitation of the Kpogede –Azizakpoe road was awarded under the contract titled “Rehabilitation of Kotokugyani – Azikope Feeder Road (12.6km)”.

Works were expected to commence on 24th February 2021 to be completed by 23rd February 2022. However, the contractor failed to commence and was issued a warning letter. No physical work has been done.

A second and final warning letter was issued to the contractor on 25th October 2021 to commence works by 12th November 2021, a failure to which the contract will be terminated and repackaged. (vii) Ayiremu -Adiembra Background The Ayiremu – Adiembra (20.0km) road is a section of the Kparekpare – Adiembra (30.2km). It is an engineered feeder road in fair condition ending at Adiembra. The road is located at the bank of the Volta Lake in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region.

A contract for the upgrading of a 4.0km section of the Kparekpare – Adiembra (30.0km) road was awarded under the contract titled [21] “Upgrading of Kparekpare – Adiembra PH.2 (Km 4.0 – 8.0)” under funding from the Road Fund. Works were expected to commence on 23rd February 2021 to be completed on 23rd February 2022.

The contractor failed to commence work and a warning letter was issued to remind the contractor of his contractual obligation but no work has commenced. A second and final warning letter was issued to the contractor on 25th October 2021 to commence works by 12th November 2021, a failure of which the contract will be terminated and repackaged.
