Over 3000 Residents Of Madina Benefit From MP Free Medical Services
Over 3000 residents of Madina Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, have benefited from free medical services that involved medical enlightenment, diagnosing and free drugs sponsored by the Member of Parliament, Hon Francis Xavier Sosu.
Beneficiaries, who included the aged, children, women, men and the youths were treated free for various ailments such as High Blood Pressure (HBP), Malaria, deworming, eye care, among others.
The screening was conducted concurrently on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at four Electoral Areas within the constituency including Teiman, North Legon, Okataban and Nkwantanang East areas.
Medical personnel from the various health institutions and the Municipal Health Directorates including Medical doctors, Nurses, biomedicals (Lab technicians), pharmacists, and other auxiliaries medical personnel.
The COVID-19 vaccine team were also present to give jabs to persons who are yet to take and those who would be taking their second dose.
Speaking to Journalists after visiting some of the screening centres, Hon Francis Sosu said, the health screening exercises are part of his social intervention policies for the people of Madina to ensure the residents are of good health and sound mind while undertaking their daily activities.
According to him, similar exercises had been carried out earlier in the year and expressed assurance that it would be continued and replicated in all Electoral Areas in the Constituency so that residents could access free medical care and counselling on their diet.
The MP who sounded concerned about the health needs of the constituents explained that the screening exercises was also to equip the residents with good health ahead of the Christmas and New year festive activities as some of them might travel, stressing that, “the overall aim is to improve the healthy living of my constituents.”
Hon Sosu reaffirmed his commitment to priorities health to promote access to primary healthcare in order to achieve the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #3, which sought to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030.
The SDG also aimed at ending preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age, with all countries aiming to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1,000 live births and under-5 mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1,000 live births by 2030.
This, the Madina MP who is the Deputy Ranking of Legal, Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament revealed that plans are far advanced to introduce mobile health Van to move around the constituency to provide free health services to residents, especially the aged and the disabled.
The Head of the Health Project, Dr Maalug Yennusom, explained that the free health screening was based on the prevalence of related cases within the Ghanaian society.
According to him, many of the residents have health cases of Hypertension, malaria, body pains, and other ailments and assured that the exercises which target about a minimum of 3000 people would be extended to other areas that yet to receive such opportunity.
As part of the MP intervention, Dr. Maalug said the team has donated medical equipment including delivery beds to the Danfa government hospital and some other health facilities within the Constituency to enhance their services.
Some of the Residents and beneficiaries who spoke to EXPRESSNEWSGHANA at the North Legon screening centre commended the MP for what they described as his generous efforts in bringing healthcare services to them free of charge to improve upon their well-being.
According to the constituents, the free health screening was a timely intervention and necessary, as healthcare delivery has become expensive for the ordinary person in the country..
“Today, I am happy, the doctors have given me plenty of medicine to take so my body pains will come down. I am a mason, but due to the COVID-19, I don’t get work to do and these days, I get some illness which I cannot afford medicine every time either at drugs store or clinic.
” I am so grateful to the MP (lawyer sosu) for bringing this free healthcare to us. There are other people like me here. And we are so grateful. We will continue to pray for him. he is just one year in office and we pray he remains in the office as MP so that we can see some development in Madina,” a 52-year-old man identified himself as Divine Agbodzo said.
Another resident identified herself as Rhoda comments were not different from Divine, she said she came to check her eyes and after going through, she was given eyeglass and asked to visit their clinic for further review, all free of charge.
“So I must thank God for giving us MP like Hon Sosu, I am so relieved. It would have cost me hundreds of cedis to acquire a medicated glass but I am getting it free,” she added.
“I feel so excited and good about this help Hon Sosu, our MP is providing for us. I would like to commend the MP and plead with him to continue this exercise in ensuring that his constituents are healthy and fit always,” another beneficiary said.
Most of them were excited about the opportunity and thanked Hon Sosu for the gesture and indicated that this was the first time such exercise was being done for the constituents.
Some of the medical officers who attended to the residents attributed most of the health conditions identified among the people to eating habits, less sleepiness, whiles others conditions were identified with family’s history or genetics situations.
The residents were advised to be health-conscious by ensuring regular check-ups, regular exercises, monitoring their sugar level or blood pressure, and as well take their medical prescription seriously.
