MP for Adentan supports over 2,000 Residents to Re-register SIMs with Ghana’s Card
As part of his social intervention policies, the Member of Parliament for Adentan, Hon Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, has supported a total of 2,132 residents to re-register their sim cards, using the Ghana Identification Card.
The exercise, according to the MP followed several complaints from residents about the difficulties they had to go through to re-register their SIM cards.
“I took a decision to assist my constituents to re-register their SIM cards this weekend in my office in the constituency after receiving several complaints from lots of people about difficulties they had to go through to re-register their SIM cards,” he said.
The exercise which took place at the Constituency office of the MP was provided by officers from some of the prominent telecom Networks including MTN, Vodafone and AirtelTigo.
It was originally scheduled for two days, thus from Friday 4th February and Saturday 5th February, but Hon Ramadan told EXPRESSNEWSGHANA, that the registration was extended to Sunday 6th February after he observed many people in the queue could not get re-registered..
“This exercise was originally scheduled for two days, but by close of Saturday, many people were still in queues, so I decided to extend the registration exercise by a day,” Hon Ramadan added.
In addition to the SIM Card re-registration, the MP also set up a table for Covid-19 vaccination and constituents with vaccination card and have already taken a jab to take their second jab and those yet to take were also given their jabs for the first time.
A total of 165 constituents were vaccinated by Health officials from the Adentan Municipality against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hon Ramadan further explained that, he organized the Registration to enable residents, especially workers who are unable to visit the Telecom outlets to register due to crowds at some of the registration centres.
The move, he said was to ease the pressure on the constituents who lives far from the telecoms outlet to get registered at a convenient point, noting that, “the re-registration doesn’t require going to any telecom outlet as the process can be carried out on mobile devices with a dedicated USSD code, as long as one has the Ghana Card.”
At the end of the three days, from Friday February 4 to Sunday, February 6, a total of 2,132, constituents who have not had the opportunity to register were successfully re-registered.
Some of the residents who successfully have their SIM Cards re-registered expressed gratitude to the MP for coming to their aid by bringing the telecos to his office to enable them get registered without difficulties.
A constituent who identified herself as Seyram Ahorlu said, she had been to the MTN registration points at Madina and East Legon , but in all the two places she could not get chance to have her SIM Card registered.
She said she remained thankful to the MP for seeing the foresight to intervene for them, stressing that she wondered how she was going to get her cards registered on time.
Other residents expressed similar gratitude to the MP and prayed for his successful administration to bring more development policies and programmes to their door steps.
The government claimed Re-registration is part of plans to strengthen Ghana’s digital economy by creating unique IDs, adding them to the country’s database, and in the process, reducing incidences of fraudulent digital activities, which have become commonplace.
Ghana Card is issued by the NIA to residential and non-residential Ghanaian citizens and serves as a means of identification in diverse situations like property acquisition, travel pass, etc.
With a population of over 30 million people, the number of mobile subscriptions in Ghana as of 2019 was 40.93 million, per Data from the statistical services.
In recent times, cybercrime in Ghana has become more prevalent and the government however, believes this is a huge step in curtailing the criminal and creating a structure for accountability in the country’s digital economy.
