MP for Assin North queries Energy Minister in parliament over lack of Power Supply to 12 Communities

The Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency, Hon James Gyakye Quayson has dragged the Minister of Energy to Parliament over nonsupply of electricity to over eleven communities in the constituency.

According to him, the communities which are predominantly farming areas help contribute to the food basket of the country but the residents lack access to electricity to improve upon their living standards.

Hon Gyakye Quayson said supplying power to the communities to be connected to the national grid would help the economic activities of the residents and ultimately increased government revenue.

HON JAMES GYAKYE

“Mr. Speaker, I rise to ask the Minister for Energy what steps the Ministry is taking to connect the following communities in the Assin North Constituency to the national grid: (i) Canaan (ii) Tatarenkwanta (iii) Aninkragya (iv) Kyeikrom (v) Subinso (vi) Dwenakyir (vii) Ayitey (viii) Gold Coast Camp (Kokwado) (ix) Krofofordo (x) Adawu/Kwaku Adu (xi) Agbodza?”,the MP asked.

In answer to the question, a deputy Minister for Energy, William Owuraku Aidoo said even though the communities do not form part of any of the Ministry’s ongoing projects, they will be factored for the next phase.

“The communities have been noted and will be considered for connection to the National Electricity Grid in subsequent phases of the electrification programme,” Mr. Owuraku Aidoo told Parliament last week.

Mr. Gyakye Quayson who is facing criminal charges including an alleged forgery and perjury took time out of his numerous court appearances to file the question.

But he remained unperturbed by the number of court cases against him as he’s always sighted in the chamber performing his parliamentary duties.

It will be recalled that the High Court in July 2021 annulled the Assin North Parliamentary elections saying Mr Quayson was not eligible to contest the polls.

Mr. Quayson has since been legally fighting to set this aside with the matter currently pending at the Court of Appeal.

A resident of the constituency Michael Ankomah Nimfah who initiated the action against the MP at the High Court has sought the intervention of the Supreme Court to stop the MP from performing Parliamentary duties. That matter remains pending as court officials have been unable to serve the MP with the court processes.
