-as Chairman Tony leads team

A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Kwabena Duffour, is set to pilot the Ashaiman Constituency of the Party of “Ahoto” Project as part of his campaign to annex the flagbearer post of the NDC ahead of the 2024 general elections.

The Ahoto which is translated into English as Reliefs project which is being tailored to alleviate the sufferings of the party’s grassroots would be piloted in Ashaiman.

Dr. Duffour unveiled his vision for the grassroots when the Ashaiman Constituency Chairman, Tony Afenyo, who doubled as Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Chairmen of the NDC, led some of the Constituency Chairmen to meet him at the Institution of Fiscal Studies (IFS) at Airport area in Accra.

As part of the Project, the NDC flagbearer aspirant would distribute Plastic Chairs, Canopies, Public address systems, power generators, podiums, and mobile toilets to the various executives of the NDC in all 275 constituencies in the country.

Mr Tony Afenyo

The items are expected to be managed by Constituency Chairmen

and rented out for commercial to groups and individuals or events like funerals, naming and marriage ceremonies, durbars, political campaigns and rallies, among others.

It is expected proceeds from the project would be used judiciously to augment funds to run activities to lessen the financial burden on Members of Parliament and executives of the difficulties they face in running the party.

Again, the project when in full force is expected to create a medium for the local party machinery to be financially self-sustaining through regular income streams to help support their ongoing initiatives while it empowers and repositions the NDC and makes it battle ready for election 2024 and beyond.

About fifty constituencies in the country would be the first beneficiaries of the project before other constituencies get their share of the booty.

Dr Kwabena Duffour

Giving background on why the former Minister for Finance decided to embark on the project the team indicated that Duffour abhors the present situation where the responsibility of raising resources for grassroots activities of the party is left in the hands of branch and constituency executives whose work for the party is purely voluntary.

Dr Dufour believed the overwhelmed financial demands from MPs by constituents, a situation he described as not a sustainable way of running a modern-day political organization.

He, therefore, asked the team to conduct a feasibility study on a feasible and sustainable business idea capable of helping to finance the NDC party activities at the local level, the team said.

“So this Initiative is a direct response to the recommendations of a business feasibility studies commissioned by Dr. Duffuor and carried out by a team across the country. It was to establish the most feasible and sustainable business idea capable of helping to finance the NDC party activities at the local level.”
