Govt has no Funds to Complete Mahama’s E-Block Project –Minister
The Minister for Education, Hon Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has confirmed that the non-availability of funds is stalling the completion of work on the Nakpayili Community Day Senior High School project in the Wulensi Constituency of the Northern Region.
According to him, the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) currently lacks funds to complete the project which is about 90 percent complete.
Dr. Adutwum disclosed this while responding to a parliamentary question posed by the Member of Parliament for Wulensi, Hon Dawuni Abukari in parliament on Thursday, June 2, 2022.
Hon Dawuni wanted to know from the Minister if there are plans to complete the E-Block project in the Nakpayili community.
“Mr. Speaker, I rise to ask the Minister for Education whether there are plans to complete the E-Block project at Nakpayili in the Wulensi Constituency meant for a Community Day Senior High School? the MP queried the Minister.
In his response, Dr. Adutwum said the Nakpayili Community Day Senior High School was awarded on contract to Messrs Sofo Azorka Company Limited as part of Phase one of the e-Block projects.
“Mr. Speaker, the project in question forms part of the Government‘s plans to complete all E-Blocks that are at advanced stages of completion and will therefore make provision for funding to complete this project subject to availability of funds,” the Minister stated.
But Hon Dawuni said he was not surprised by the Minister’s answers because the current government intended to abandon projects started under the previous government and that the non-availability of funds is simply a cover-up as there are funds to construct a National Cathedral.
He said the government free senior high school policy would not be adequately fulfilled without structures such as the Nakpayili and other similar projects initiated by the previous government under John Mahama.
The lawmaker said the Wulensi Senior High school could not absorb the large number of children qualified for senior high school, stressing that the Nakpayili project serves as an important intervention policy project and should be completed to absorb more students.
The project, the MP said has been completed but needed a few finishing touches before it is commissioned for use in 2016.
