Govt neglect of Basic Schools for Free SHS worrying-MP for Wa West

The Member of Parliament for Wa West, Hon Peter Lanchene Toobu has expressed worried about the total neglect of basic schools by the government and only focused on free senior High Schools.

According to him, if the foundation which is the basic schools are not  grounded and strong, the second cycle’s schools would not have a better future.

Hon Toobu made the comment after he posed a question to the Minister for Education in parliament  on what steps are being taken  to equip classrooms in the Wa West Constituency.

“Mr. Speaker, I rise to ask the Minister for Education what plans the Government has to equip the many classrooms without furniture in the Wa West Constituency with the needed furniture,” he asked.

In response, the sector Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum said the Ministry has procured various furniture types since 2021 to equip newly constructed and existing Basic School structures across the country.

According to him, the furniture needs of schools in the Wa West Constituency are being assessed by the Ghana Education Service (GES) for consideration in future interventions.

But Hon Toobu told EXPRESSNEWSGHANA, that he was unsatisfied with the Minister’s response for almost all the schools in the constituency have no any form of furniture and wondered how the school children will be able to learn in such an environment

” I unatisfied with the Minister’s response to my question, because the Minister has failed to indicate when the children in my constituency will get furniture in their classrooms.”

“When you go round the constituency, all the basic schools do not have any form of  furniture. The School children sit on the floor. The schools were built without furniture. Even during our time, we did not suffer this way.  It appears the government is pumping everything into the free senior high school, leaving the basic schools.

“But you know, if the basic is not strong, the upper will not produce quality results. The Constitution provided for Free and Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) but we are not implementing the law at the basic school level, rather at the top, it would not help us as a country,” Hon Toobu added.
