The 2022 Parliamentary Data Fair spearheaded by the Research Department of Parliament in collaboration with the Africa Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and INASP, ended successfully last Thursday, with a call on Data producers to step up in providing quality data.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 3-Day data fair, the Director of Research of Parliament, Mr. Mohammed Nyagsi said the department remained committed to collaborating with other stakeholders to provide Members of Parliament and parliament with reliable research information to enable Parliament and parliamentarians to perform their legislative and accountable role effectively.
He said the department has over the few years provided good quality of information to MPs and would double the effort in the years ahead.
He commended the organizers for the program, stating that, it was the best of all with many state institutions participating and expressed the hope that the subsequent Data Fairs would bring more of such to enhance the quality of the Parliamentary data fair.
A Deputy Clerk to Parliament in charge of Legislative Drafting, Ebenezer Ahuma Djietror said MPs who use credible and reliable data often deliver strong and more effective debate than those who do not search for information before contributing to the debate.
He urged the parliament research staff to continue to work to give parliament and MPs better and more reliable information as they need such information to help parliament to achieve it legislative role.
On his part, a Senior Governance Advisor with ACEPA, Issifu Lampo said the 2022 event was quite remarkable as many MPs visited the exhibition stands to appreciate the importance of Data.
He added that the event was more interactive better than previous events and urged the research staff of parliament to continue with the good work to enhance parliamentary democracy.
The Parliament Data Fair under the patronage of Interdepartmental known as IDRIG was aimed at promoting collaboration among information units in parliament as they work to meet the data and information needs of members and staff of the Parliament of Ghana
The second phase of the Project spans from December 2021 to December 2024 and is aimed at promoting evidence use in Parliament’s performance of its mandate especially in overseeing progress towards the SDGs.
The theme for this year’s fair was “Openness and Transparency: Promoting the use of credible Data and Evidence in the Parliament of Ghana.”
Comprehensive data for monitoring the progress of SDG implementation is crucial to enable parliaments to perform their oversight and accountability roles effectively.
Data for Accountability help the Parliament of Ghana to improve national quality of life through evidence, by using data to oversee progress towards SDGs.
