Work on the Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant ( IRECOP),sited in the various regions are progressing steadily as some are ready to be commissioned.

The IRECOP projects at Ho Municipality and Dambai in Volta and Oti regions respectively are set to be Commissioned by end of the year.

The IRECOP plants are being established across the country by the Jospong Group of Companies in collaboration with the Government of Ghana under the Sanitation Levy Fund.

According to the Head of Medical Waste at Ho, Mr Senam Tenge, the plant is 85 percent complete.
He said the group is at the final stage which is the assembling of plants and hopes to complete it by end of the year.
He revealed this to the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) who paid a visit to the plant which is located in Akrofu Agorve in Ho.
Taking journalist on a tour in the facility, Ing Tenge noted that the plant will work in such a way that every waste that will be brought there will be converted to a reusable good.
He noted that organic waste will be converted into fertilzers for onward distribution to farmers while inorganic waste such as plastics, metals and leathers will be converted into other reusables.

“Everything brought here will be converted into a reusable good,” he said.
He noted that before the establishment of this plamt, waste was collected and transported to the final disposal site without any value addition.

“With this plant in place, what we will be doing is that when the waste is generated from the various sites being the market place, school, the waste is brought to this site, the waste is sorted , recycled and used to produce other items.”

As to the number of persons that could be employed within the region, Mr Tenge said the plant is expected to create a direct employment for 100 people while indirect job creation is estimated to be about 500.
“So you realise that this facility here, established in Ho is really going to change the employment status of the youth in this region,” Mr Tenge observed.
Speaking about safety issues, Ing Tenge said that based on international practices, plants of this nature are supposed to be established at the outskirt of a town in order to free the community from any harful emissions and that informed the establishment of the plant at the outskirt of Akrofu Agorve.
“At the international level waste processing sites needs to be located at the outskirt of town and city because of the nature of operation that happens here.
“This site has been allocated to us so that the operation that is done here will not have any negative environmental impact on the people in the community.”
He however noted that the nature of their machines emits low pollutants and assured that the community is safe.
He also noted that the EPA is also there to ensure that their operations does not affect anyone.
The Medical Waste Treatment facility which is situated on the same site is near completion and would start operation.
The facility will also see to the treatment and recycling of medical waste from hospitals and any other facility that produce medical waste.
