The absence of a police patrol vehicle is affecting policing in the Yuno District of the North East Region, Member of Parliament for the Yunyo Constituency, Hon Oscar Lilwaal has said.

According to him, the crime rates, especially thefts and other domestic crimes have increased due to the lack of vehicles for the police to increase their visibility to deter criminals in the District.

Hon Liwaal reveals this when he posed a question to the Minister of Interior,  Hon Ambros Dery on the floor of parliament last Thursday, November 10, 2022.

He wanted to know from the Minister when the police in the Yunyo District would be provided with a patrol vehicle to curb rising crime in the area.

“Mr. Speaker, I rise to ask the Minister for the Interior when the Ministry will provide Yunyo District with a police patrol van to improve patrols in the District,” Hon Liwaal quizzed the Interior Minister.

In response, the sector Minister Hon Ambros Dery said the Akufo-Addo-led government is committed to fighting crime in the country and has over the years resourced the police services with vehicles and other logistics to enable them to perform effectively.

According to the Minister, the police are currently in short supply of vehicles and the Yunyo District would be considered anytime vehicles are available.

Nonetheless, he noted that the North-East Regional police command had been asked to ensure regular patrols in the Yunyo District as a short-term measure, stressing that the police would double the effort to maintain law and order in every part of the country.

The Minister further assured the MP and the people of Yunyo, the police services would continue to put an eye on the District to curb any incident of extreme crime, especially community conflicts and other hard crimes like robbery, among others.

But Hon Liwaal appeals to the government for a permanent District police command office, and an increase of personnel, accommodation, and vehicle.

He said the absence of patrol vehicles and the full complement of the District police command contributed to the increasing level of crime, hence the need for government to make a timely intervention.

Hon Liwaal spoke to EXPRESSNEWSGHANA,  about the crime situation in the Yunyo area.

The Yunyo District was carved out from the Bunkrurugu-Yunyo District in 2018 and it has no permanent police command and logistics.

The MP expressed worried about the absence of police and the alarming rate of crime, especially during the Christmas season and inter-tribal conflicts.
