The Member of Parliament for Gomoa East, Hon Desmond De-Graft Paitoo has appealed to the government through the Ministry of Health to provide health infrastructure for the Postin Polyclinic in the constituency to meet the daily healthcare needs of the constituents and public.

According to him, the Postin Polyclinic has become a national emergency referral health centre in the country, but the absence of the requisite infrastructure had put the facility’s services under pressure.

Hon Paitoo made the call when he posed a question to the Minister for Health on the floor of parliament on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.

“MR Speaker, I rise to ask the Minister for Health, if there are plans to expand the infrastructure of the Postin Polyclinic in the Gomoa East Constituency to meet the demands of the people/residents?,” the MP quizzed the Health Minister.

The MP also ask the Minister for Health what measures or plans the Ministry is putting in place to upgrade Nyanyano Health Center to a polyclinic due to the current rise of population in the community.

In response, the Minister for Health, Hon Kweku Agyeman-Manu said it is the wish of the government that “the Potsin Polyclinic was part of the ten (10) polyclinics that were built for the Central Region by the Ministry of Health. This was commissioned for use in 2018 and is currently in full operation with all services being provided as a polyclinic.”

On the matter of the Nyanyano Health Centre, the Minister said the theatre of the facility has been expanded and fully equipped for general surgery services to serve the people better.

“Mr. Speaker, According to the Ghana Health Service and the Central Regional Health Directorate, there are no immediate plans for the expansion of the infrastructure of the polyclinic.

However, the Minister said the Ministry has an assessment based on the request and evaluates the facility for consideration of further expansion and budgeting in the ensuing years’ budgets. Our ability to implement this will largely depend on the quantum of budgetary allocation to the Ministry in subsequent years.

“Mr. Speaker, the Ministry of Health is aware that the Nyanyano Health Centre lacks the needed infrastructure for a polyclinic and has plans to upgrade the facility to a polyclinic,” he said.

The Minister explained that the facility currently has uncompleted buildings such as the maternity ward, theatre, and others that were initiated by the chief of the community.

“The Ministry through the Regional Directorate for Health Services is engaging with relevant stakeholders including the Gomoa East District Assembly to complete these abandoned projects to improve upon the infrastructure to benefit a polyclinic standard,” Hon Agyeman-Manu added.

Nevertheless, Hon Paitoo told EXPRESSNEWSGHANA, the Postin Polyclinic should be provided with additional infrastructure to be able to contain the increasing number of patients it receives, especially the geographical location.

He said in any emergency situation between Accra and cape-Coast –Takoradi route, the Postin Polyclinic is the most referral till that situation needs further referral.
