Bad Roads Causing Our Cocoa, Foodstuff to Rot- MP for Suaman
The investments of cocoa farmers in the Suaman Constituency of the Western North Region are going waste due to the nature of bad roads linking the farming communities to the markets centres.
The situation had made it impossible for farmers in the constituency to transport their cocoa and other foodstuff from the farm gates to market centres, Hon Joseph Betino, Member of Parliament for Suaman has said.
According to him, the road from 3-Miles to Antwikrom IS one of the most affected roads which is making farmers; especially cocoa producers have their products rot in the farmland.
Hon Betino made this known when he dragged the Minister for Roads and Highways to parliament over the bad nature of the 3-Miles to Antwikrom road.
“Mr. Speaker, I rise to ask the Minister for Roads and Highways, what plans the Ministry has to construct the road from 3-Miles to Antwikrom in the Suaman Constituency?”, the MP asked the Minister.
In response, the Sector Minister Hon Kwesi Amoako Atta said, the 24km road was partly awarded covering 12 km for spot improvement under the Contract title, “Spot Improvement of 3-Miles –Akordie Feeder Road.
According to the Minister, the Contract was awarded in 2020, but the contractor is yet to submit all required documents to enable the signing of the Contract agreement and subsequent commencement of works.
He explained that engineering design studies would be carried out on the Akordie to Antwikrom section of the 12km of the road by the end of the first quarter of 2023 for consideration under the 2024 budget.
But Hon Betino expressed dissatisfaction with the Minister’s response on grounds that, the road has developed potholes and farmers found it’s difficult to transport their farm produces, especially cocoa and foodstuff.
He however appealed to the government through the Ministry to consider reshaping the road in the meantime to enable motorists to carry farm produce and also help in access to healthcare.
The MP however urged the constituents to remain faithful to him as he continued to lobby for the needed projects for the constituency.
