The office of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Navrongo-Central constituency in the Upper East Region, Hon Sampson Tangumbu Chiragia, has listed the Achievement of the MP in the education sector as he closed two years in office.

Upon assumption of office as representative of the people in parliament on January 7, 2021, the lawmaker prioritized education as the bedrock to propel the development of the constituency, which is largely rural.

As part of his vision, Hon Chiragia, a member of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament, supplied over 500 dual metal desks to some of the basic schools that do not have furniture to enable pupils to enjoy teaching and learning.

In addition to that, the MP quickly mobilized resources and constructed an ultra-modern community Library at the Korania community to improve student’s learning and performance.

Some dilapidated primary schools in Saabisi and Bonia communities within the constituency which have not received renovation for decades have also been renovated to provide a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Hon Chiragia said that had it not been for education, he would not have had the opportunity to become MP, hence the interest to focus on the support of education in the Constituency.

According to him, within the two years of his four-year mandate, many students  have gained admission into a certain tertiary institution which ordinarily, they would not have gotten, nothing that, “I  facilitated admission for more than 200 students who without my intervention would have denied admission.”

“Some of these students I am talking about have had admission in the University of Technology and Allied Science (UTAS) in Navrongo, St John Bosco College of Education and Nursing Training Colleges,” he added.

The MP said aside from the admission support; he has also provided scholarships for over 230 students in various tertiary institutions and as well supplied free examination writing materials to Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates within the years under review to reduce the burden on parents.

To boost quality education through Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Hon Chiragia has organized and sponsored certified IT training for over 170 youth within Navrongo Central.

The overall purpose is to open up the area to the global world where the youth would be able to reprove on their research and other internet services.

As if that is not enough, the MP also equipped the Municipal Directorate of Education with eight laptops and five printers to enable the Directorate to work efficiently and effectively.

He said the needs of the constituents remained the biggest concern to him and he would work hard to complement the confidence reposed on him, stating, “I am forever grateful to the people who turned out in their number on December 7, 2020, to cast their votes for me and the NDC.”

Generally, the MP believed Navrongo-Central which has become a cosmopolitan municipality with its strong pioneering education background, much attention should be given to the education sector to improve access to education for the needy and to boost students’ performance.

He further pledged to continue to lobby, advocate and facilitate the completion of abandoned education projects started by the previous NDC government and new ones to boost quality education.
