The National Identification Authority (NIA) office at the Kpando municipality in the Volta Region has been closed down due to debts to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) , the Member of Parliament for Kpando Constituency, Hon Della Sowah revealed.

According to the MP, the situation has stalled the Ghana Card registration exercise in the constituency.
Hon Della Sowah revealed this in parliament when she dragged the Minister for Communication, Hon Ursula Owusu to parliament over the non availability of the NIA registration on Tuesday,February 14, 2023.
She told members of the parliamentary press corp that workers in charge of the registration process are unable to register Ghana Cards due to their inability to pay the electricity bill.

She said the total amount of Bill debt to ECG is a little over GHS5,000.00, by the NIA .

Hon.Della Sowah however called on the government to address the matter to to ensure that the production daily is increased from 10 to the number feasible to meet the SIM registration deadline.

“…Ghana Card registration in my constituency has stalled due to the inability to pay the electricity bill. They haven’t worked for the past five months, so no registration is going on because they owe a bill of GHC 5000.”

She added that the situation occassioned was a result of the incompetent and ineptitude economic management by the Akufo-Addo led government .

The MP said closing down the NIA office due to the ECG debt is delivered to deny his people chance to register onto the Ghana Card.

Meanwhile, Minister for Communication, Ursula Ekuful Owusu, has revealed that there are a total of 42,451,296 SIMs including newly registered ones in Ghana’s system.

However, as of February 9, 2023, only 33,793,132 have completed stage 1 of the registration while 8,68,164 are yet to link their Ghana Cards to their SIMs.
