The Member of Parliament for Wassa East, Hon Isaac Adjei Mensah, has said he is suspicious the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is in collusion with the Electoral Commission (EC) to use the Constitutional Instrument (C.I) to disenfranchise citizens from exercises their constitutional right by removing the gurantor system in voter registration.

According to him, the outright defence of the yet to be laid CI raised a lot of suspicion.

The new CI sought to make the Ghana Card the sole.identification of citizenship for Voter Register.

The EC told parliament last week, the abuse of the qurantor system necessitated the removal.

But the Wassa East MP said there was no cause for EC to rush in making the Ghana Card the sole identity document for voter registration purposes now and opined that such should be a priority only when the Ghana Card was generally accessible.

“We should wait till systematically everybody would get it and at a point that we can say fine, everybody has got the Ghana Card and we now want to say that is the only card that you can use to register and, if possible, to go and vote. But not now. I don’t understand. You are telling people that the country is broke, and they should forgo their investment interests.

EC BOSS JEAN MENSAH

“So we are concern, the farmers in the communities who for no falt of theirs, they don’t have the Ghana Card, why should they be denied the opportunity to register and vote ?

Things are hard, the government said it cannot pay contractors. Even the Contractor that the NIA owed, you have not paid. And you the same government would then turn round to spend on things you think are priorities when the people don’t believe they are priorities. It’s not the best. It’s not the best,” he emphasised.
