The Member of Parliament for Sawla/Tuna/Kalba- Constituency in the Savannah Region, Hon Andrew Dari Chiwitey has summoned the Minister for the Interior to Parliament over the activities of Fulani Herdsmen which destroyed farm lands in the area.
According to him, the Herdsmen have violated the laws of the country and invaded farms in the area to graze their cattle, a situation he noted could degenerate to conflict if the menace is not check.
Hon Chiwitey made the call when he dragged the Minister for Interior to Parliament to find out the steps the Ministry is taking to curb the Fulani Herdsmen activities.
“Mr Speaker, I rise to ask the
Minister for the Interior what urgent steps are being taken to curb the
activities of Fulani herdsmen whose animals continue to destroy
farms and farm produce thereby posing security threat,” Hon Chiwitey quizzed the Interior Minister.
In response, the sector Minister, Hon Ambrose Dery said, the Savannah Regional Security Council in
collaboration with the Technical Committee of Eminent Chiefs
established by the Savana Regional House of Chiefs have had series
of discussions with the leadership of the Fulani herdsmen and
educated them on the need to take care of their cattle and prevent
them from causing damage to people’s farms.
According to him, a part of the education , the Herdsmen are made to be aware that any action or failures to abide by the
rules would lead to their ejection from their lands and possibly the entire enclave.
The Minister said as part of curtailing the activities, some of the cattle owners have been
charged and put before court for destruction of farms and cause of insecurity.
He added that, the commended the initiative by the Savannah Regional
House of Chiefs to form a Technical Committee for social cohesion
and integrate Fulani herdsmen into the local communities.
The initiative, Hon Dery said is also supported by the Regional
Security Council to avert unnecessary clashes between farmers and
herdsmen.
The Minister said as part of ensuring adequate security, the Police have intensified patrols within the
communities to ward off miscreant, especially those Herdsmen who commit other crime like stealing and robbery.
He called on the MP and the Residents to collaborate with the security to curb the situation, adding that security is a shared responsibility.
But Hon Chiwitey said the police is only presence in the towns but not in the farmlands where the crimes are been committed.
He suggested that if possible the security services rather patrol in the farms where the Herdsmen graze their cattle.
