Hon Thomas Adda Dalu, the Member Parliament (MP) for Chiana/Paga Constituency in the Upper East Region, has urged delegates and supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the constituency to ensure unity prevails after the party’s primaries.

According to him, the contest was to solidify the democratic credentials of the NDC while ensuring that the party’s interest remained paramount before, during, and after the internal elections.

Hon Dalu said this during an interview with EXPRESSNEWSGHANA in Parliament after he had filed his nomination to contest the parliamentary primary with the hope of retaining to lead the constituency into the 2024 general election.

“My focus is unity after the primaries, we should not be wasting our time reconciling…We should go straight into the action to win the election in 2024. Unity within the party is of importance to me.  It is only unity that can help us retain the seat irrespective of who wins the primaries,” Hon Dalu said.

The Chiana/Paga Constituency is one of the poorest constituencies in the country laden with many challenges including the lack good road network, poor standard of education due to financial issues among parents,  poor access to healthcare services, and potable water in some communities, which the MP  said he was working hard to address.

“I am trying hard to improve the standard of education in our constituency. Within the two years of my four-year mandate, I have been able to assist a number of students at various levels of tertiary education. I can say, over 250 students have received some sort of support through my share of the MPs Common Funds to pay fees, among others.

“You know this government (NPP) has starved MPs of our common fund. it is that common fund we use to settle some of the needy issues by our constituents. So, we are trying hard and within the remaining two years we can work to reduce these challenges,” he added.

“These, among other challenges, pushed me to contest the primaries and hopefully, former President John Mahama will also win so I work and push for the needed development of our constituency,” Hon Dalu, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament said.

Ghanaians went to the polls on December 7, 2020, to elect Members of Parliament and for the 275 Constituencies and President.

At the close of polls, Hon Thomas Dalu pulled 21, 945 votes representing 57.79  per cent of the total votes cast, beating his close competitor, Robert Apechira Aloo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who managed to obtain 15, 540 votes representing 40.91 per cent of votes.

He however expressed confidence in receiving an overwhelming endorsement from the delegates as they did in the 2019 primary, which saw him emerge winner against other aspirants.
