Dr. Opare-Djan Nana, the Ag. Director M&E Division National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), has charged the Middle Belt Development Authority (MBDA) to ensure it’s development projects are aligned with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) infrastructure needs within its jurisdiction.

According to him, the alignment of the projects would inform NDPC in its policy planning and strategy development with the infrastructure database available for the country.

Dr Opare-Djan made the call at the inaugural ceremony of two sub-committees of the Authority in Kumasi on Wednesday, May 31,2023

The Committees which Dr. Opare-Djan had been nominated to serve on includes the Project and Development and the Legal & Corporate Affairs.

He said the Middle Belt Authority has the mandate to undertake the needed projects within the five Regional Coordinating Councils under it’s geographical area, but such projects must be in alignment with the Medium term Plans prepared by the MMDAs.

“I take the opportunity to also urged the MBDA to periodically submit progress reports on the implementation of activities in order for NDPC to report accordingly in the National Annual Progress Reports.

“You must ensure that all projects undertaken are in alignment with the Medium term Plans prepared by the MMDAs within the geographical jurisdiction of the 5 Regional Coordinating Councils. Also, you must submit progress reports on the implementation of your activities in order for NDPC to report accordingly in the National Annual Progress Reports.

“Again, the project database software develop by the Authority must be linked to the Ghana Integrated Infrastructure Database and the National Monitoring and Evaluation Information System which is housed in our office, the NDPC,” Dr Opare-Djan said.

He however assured the Authority of his commitment to contribute meaningfully as a member of it’s sub committees to enhance it’s development objectives.

Dr Opare-Djan has been the focal person for developmental issues from the NDPC and has over the years been calling on local authorities to share data with the Commission to enhance national development plans.

The Middle Belt Authority, he noted has the potential of bridging the development gaps in the the five RCCs but could only achieve that if it’s operate inline with the MMDAs visions.

Prior to the inauguration of the Committees, the MBDA has sworn in it’s Chief Executive Officer ( CEO), Mr Joseph Kumah Mackay on 21st April 2023.

As part of it’ activities, the new management of MBDA is to rebrand the Authority to ensure visibility to promote the developmental activities of the five regions under it’s jurisdiction.

The Authority has also scheduled a retreat at Koforidua in June 2023 where the Director General of the Planning Commission has been invited to present the National Development Agenda to members of the Board.

The MBDA was established in 2017 by Act 962, of Parliament to among others bring development to it’s area.

The regions that fall within the MBDA Includes Ashanti, Eastern, Bono, Bono East and Ahafo.
