President Akufo-Addo government has blocked Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Bagbin, Subscriber Identity Module (SIM), thereby denying him opportunity to make calls and messages.

The Member of Parloament (MP) for Ningo Prampram, Hon Samuel Nartey George, revealed this in Parliament on Tuesdatly, June 6,2023, when parliament resumed to sitting after the Easter Recess.

The lawmaker thus called for the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu Ekuful be drag to parliament as a matter of urgency explain the house on the ongoing SIM card deactivation.

“We should have this briefing today if possible because we are talking about over 8 million SIM cards that have been disconnected including even the SIM card of Mr Speaker of Parliament himself. His official SIM card was disconnected even though it was registered in the name of the Parliament for Ghana.

“We have judges, lawyers, doctors, and MPs whose SIM cards were disconnected. Even my SIM card was disconnected.

“The Stubborn Academy is insisting the National Identification Authority must provide us, Ghana Card. It is important that the Minister briefs this house even if possible today because people’s livelihoods have been affected,” he said.

According to Sam George, the action of government has extended to millions of Ghanaians who for the default of inaccessible to the Ghana Card by the National Identification Authority (NIA) would be badly affected.

The deactivation of the unregistered SIM cards was in compliance with a directive by the National Communications Authority (NCA)
