Former captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan has admitted that he feels more respected and appreciated by Ghanaians after he was celebrated in parliament following his retirement from football.

Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annor-Dompreh, on the floor of parliament on June 22, 2023, urged the nation to honour Gyan for his achievements in football.

Gyan expressed gratitude to parliament after paying a courtesy call on the Majority Chief Whip, noting that having parliament eulogies him made him feel even more valued.

“Since childhood, I’ve never seen parliament discuss a player and I feel very honoured and appreciative. I would like to thank parliament and honorable Frank Annoh for raising this issue,” he said.

Asked whether he feels appreciated by Ghanaians, he said: “Before, I will say no, because there was a lot of disrespect. I go on social media and I see a lot of disrespect and I feel like I’m one of those guys who placed Ghana on the map, and the masses can also confirm, but seeing what went on in parliament, I’m now beginning to feel appreciated by Ghanaians. I don’t really care about what people say, but parliament has confirmed, and I’m sure the masses also know in their heart that I should be celebrated.”

The 37-year-old added that he believes it is time people understand the impact that he has made in Ghana football.

“Maybe it is the right time for people to understand the name Asamoah Gyan, the impact of that name. Now, my heart is at peace and I really appreciate it.”

Gyan closed the chapter of his football career on June 21, 2023, having played 20 years of active football.

He played for clubs including Sunderland in the English Premier League, Al Ain, Shanghai SIPG, Kayserispor, Udinese, Rennes, among other clubs.

Gyan made 109 appearances for the Black Stars, scoring 51 goals, and retired as Africa’s top scorer on the World Cup stage.
