Upper East NPP Encourages Women to Contest Parliamentary Primaries
The Upper East Regional Communication Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Ayinbisah has called on women in the region to pick up nomination forms to contest the upcoming parliamentary primaries of the party.
According to him “the party respects gender and wants to encourage women to be part and parcel of the process” adding that “women and persons with disabilities are given 50% down payment of the nomination fees” of which males are to pay a non-refundable filing fee of GH₵35,000.
This, he explained, was to create space for them in the multiparty democratic system the country was enjoying.
Mr. Ayinbisa made the call when he was speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East show with Mark Smith regarding the opening of nomination forms by the Party in orphan constituencies and the picking of nomination forms by party faithful in the region.
Mr. Ayinbisah revealed that 17 aspirants as of the close of yesterday, 16th July 2023 have picked nomination forms to contest for the position of parliamentary candidate to represent the party in the 2024 general elections.
He detailed that, 4 persons and 3 persons in the Bawku central and Navrongo Constituencies have picked forms respectively to contest while 2 persons in each of the Tempane, Chiana Paga and Talensi constituencies have picked nomination forms.
Also, one person in each of Garu, Bawku West and Pusiga constituencies picked nomination forms to contest the parliamentary primaries while no candidate in Nabdam, Bongo, Bulsa South, Bulsa North and Bolga Central constituencies picked forms.
The Binduri constituency is the only constituency in the region that is being held by the party and nominations are said to be opened in constituencies with representation in February next year.
Mr. Ayinbisa said more people are expected to pick nomination forms as a good number of people across the region had expressed interest and have begun internal engagement with delegates.
The party opened nominations on Tuesday, 11th July and is said to close on Thursday, August 10 2023 and elections are expected to be held from September to December.
