Prez Tinubu’s Zero Tolerance for Coups Will Restore Hope in ECOWAS-Hon Bedzrah
A member of the Legal Affairs and Humans Rights Committee of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Parliament, Hon Emmanuel Kwesi Bedzrah has expressed confidence that Nigeria’s President, Mr. Bola Tinubu as Chairman of the sub-regional bloc would restore democracy in the sub-region.
According to him, President Tinubu’s plans to strengthen ECOWAS Standby Force to deter Coups, and terrorism in the Sub-region would go a long way to improve the democratic process and change of government in the Sub-region.
Hon Bedzrah who is a member of Ghana’s parliament representing Ho West in the Volta Region said this during an interview with EXPRESSNEWSGHANA, in Parliament House, Accra
He said the sub-regional bloc had suffered unabated military interference in the last few years, making the sub-regional bloc vulnerable to terrorism and other extremists.
For instance, Mr Bedzrah said between August 2020 and now, five coups have occurred in three West African countries including Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea with attempts in The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau foiled.
This, he said does not speak well of the ECOWAS sub-region, and believed the determination of President Tinubu to crack the whip on military juntas would be the best for the West African nations.
The Ghanaian lawmaker also expressed confidence that President Tinubu would restore the ailing economy of Nigeria, the biggest economy of the ECOWAS enclave.
Below are excerpts from an interview with Hon.Bedzrah
At his maiden speech at the Heads of States meeting recently, President Tinubu said coups would no longer be allowed in the West African region under his leadership as chairperson of the sub-regional bloc, ECOWAS.
