Over seven major feeder roads that link to many farming communities within the Nalerigu/Gambaga Constituency in the North East Region, are to receive a facelift in the 2024 budget.

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon Kwesi Amoako Atta revealed this while answering a question on the floor of parliament on Friday, July 21, 2023.

THE Member of Parliament for the Constituency, Hon Seidu Issifu posed a question to the Minister over the bad condition of the over seven communities’ roads in the Constituency.

The MP wanted to know from the Minister what plans the government through the Ministry has to contract culverts on the farming communities’ roads to enable easy transportation of farm produces.

“Mr. Speaker, I rise to ask the Minister for Roads and Highways what plans the Ministry has for the culverts on the roads in the following communities: (i) Poana – Yiri (ii) Chirifo – Yiri (iii) Bunbuazio (iv) Laafurim – Takoratinga (v) Dintigi?”, the MP questioned the Minister.

In response, the sector Minister said, the Poana-Yiri feeder road is identified on the Department of Feeder Roads (DFR) database as the Namangu-Boorugu-Poana Yiri feeder road.

According to him, the road covers 10km long and non-engineered road in poor condition but there is no work currently ongoing on it.

However, he said engineering studies and a condition survey would be conducted on the road by the end of the third quarter of 2023 to determine the appropriate intervention for the road, emphasizing that, “The execution of the works will be considered under the 2024 budget subject to the availability of funds.”

The other feeder roads, including Chirifo-Yiri, Bunbuazio, Laafurim – Takoratinga and Dintigi communities are on similar non-engineered roads in poor condition.

He said as part of the government effort to construct roads for all communities, engineering studies and condition surveys would be carried out on the roads for spot improvement by the end of the third quarter of 2023 but the execution of the works would be considered under the 2024 budget.

The Minister assured that the government would not renege on its promises and that the communities would be considered in the 2024 budget to make the roads motorable for farmers.

Nevertheless, Hon Seidu expressed the hope that the Minister would keep his promises and ensure that the roads receive a facelift by way of regular reshaping and graveling for easy transportation for farmers and traders.

He said the bad conditions of the roads are affecting the local economy, as many farmers experience post-harvest losses due to the poor road network to cart their produce to the markets.
