UE/R: Residents of Sirigu Community to Stage Big Demo over Death Trape Roads
Residents of Sirigu in the Kasena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region have served notice of their intention to embark on a mammoth demonstration to press home their demands to the government to as a matter of urgency fix a collapsed bridge which they described as a “death trap.”
Two persons were reported recently to have fallen into the bridge which linked the Community to the Bongo District through the neighboring Zorko Community.
For the timely intervention, the two victims identified as Adongo and Asaah would have lost their lives in the collapsed bridge which was constructed in the 1990s under President Jerry John Rawlings’s administration.
Though Adongo and Asaah escaped death, they are currently receiving treatment at the Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga.
Several residents, especially travelers on the Sirigu-Zorko road have had similar deadly experiences on the road which served as an economic road and an access route to the trans-ECOWAS road linking Paga to Burkina-Faso.
Despite several calls to the government through the District Assembly, the government continued to pay lip services to the good people of Sirigu and its neighboring Zorko Communities.
As a result, the Paramount Chief of Sirigu Traditional Area, Naba Roland Atogumdeyaa Akwara III, said the youth are ready to demonstrate to register their displeasure over the life-threatening nature of the bridge
According to the traditional Chief, he has been to Mr. Kwasi Amoako Atta, the Minister of Roads and Highways office, and a delegation of engineers was sent to Sirigu to inspect the bridge.
He said since then, he has not gotten any information from the ministry regarding when the bridge will be awarded to a contractor.
Naba Akwara III expressed his displeasure considering how long the bridge have been left uncompleted.
Mr. Samuel Atanga, one of the focal opinion leaders of the youth has made numerous appeals to the government to fix the bridge.
