The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Bagbin has said the leaked tape on an alleged plot against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, is an important issue that parliament should not flip over to investigate.

According to him, the leaked tape borders on national security which could affect the country in one way or the other, hence the need for parliament to take steps to investigate the conclusion of the matter.

The Rt Hon Speaker commented after he received the list of the Special Committee set by the House to investigate the matter.

The seven member Special Committee is chaired by Hon Samuel Atta Akyea, MP for Abuakwa South with Hon James Agalga, MP for Builsa North as Vice Chair.

The rest of the Committee members include Patrick Buamah, MP for Okaikoi Central, Hon Eric Opoku, MP for Asunafo South, Hon Peter Lanchene Toobu, MP for Wa West, Hon. Ophelia Mensah, MP for Mfansiman and Dr. Isaac Lartey Mensah, who would serve as a technical person.

The Committee has been tasked to investigate the leaked tape and submit a report to the table office by 10th September 2023.

According to the Speaker, the committee will investigate the authenticity of the leaked audio recording, the conspiracy to remove the current IGP, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, and any other matter contained in the audio recording and recommend sanctions to persons found culpable where appropriate.

It would also to make recommendations for reforms where necessary and make such other recommendations and consequential orders as the committee may deem appropriate.

The audio recording captures the voices of some top officials said to be with the Ghana Police Service and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) discussing the IGP.

They are heard questioning the impartiality of the IGP, claiming he has the support of former President John Dramani Mahama, and so scheming to ensure the return of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The persons are, therefore, calling for his removal before the 2024 general elections.

The party official whose voice is heard on the tape is said to be the former Northern Region Chairman of the NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu, who has denied recording the conversation.
