MP for Madina Provides Reading Books to Basic Schools to Boost Education
The Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency, Hon Francis Xavier Sosu has provided some reading books to over 45 Public and Private Basic schools within the nine Circuits of the La-Nkwantang Municipal Assembly of the Greater Accra Region.
The donation which sought to boost the reading skills of the pupils was done in collaboration with LIFE for Relief and Development, a United States of America (USA) based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) with its Country Directorate in Ghana.
According to the MP, the provision of the reading books, formed part of his commitment and educational campaign dubbed “Empowering Minds; Enriching Lives” which has been initiated to create and increase awareness of the numerous benefits of reading, particularly to children.
The “Empowering Minds; Enriching Lives”, campaign he emphasized, is to encourage children to learn to read and after they have learnt to read, to continue to read for life.
This, Hon Sosu said would ultimately help to promote quality education, increase the quality of life and general well-being, and eradicate ignorance, poverty, and disease.
“By empowering minds, we unlock multiple human potentials. We enable individuals to discover their passions, pursue their dreams, and achieve their goals. Empowered minds have the confidence to embrace change, adapt to new technologies and innovations, and face the future with resilience,” he added.
He said lives could be enriched when opportunities are created for everyone to thrive, irrespective of their background, gender, or socioeconomic status, but stressed that that could only be achieved through empowered minds.
While encouraging the pupils to take their books seriously and read all the time to enrich their minds, the lawmaker also reassured the constituents of his commitment to work hard to reduce the yawning educational and other developmental problems confronting the constituency.
“As a Member Of Parliament, I have committed to the noble cause of empowering minds and enriching lives through human capital development. This is why in the last two and half years I have invested in education, mentorship, and lifelong learning opportunities.
“The Best Teacher Award, Appreciation of both Teaching and Non-teaching staff for life-long services, Library Projects, Provision of Desks and Computers to some schools, Scholarships to brilliant but vulnerable and needy students from basic to University levels, B.E.C.E Outreaches, Water For all Project are part of the few such impactful achievements I have brought to MADINA Constituency,” Hon Sosu said.
He commended the NGO for the timely intervention to support the cause of education within the Madina Constituency and promised to continue to collaborate with them to provide more such support.
The MP also expressed appreciation to the Municipal Directorate of Education, Heads of schools, and their teaching staff across the constituency for their hard work and reassured that, so far he remains MP for the area, their efforts will forever be recognized.
The Country Director for Life for Relief and Development, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim said the NGO is a Humanitarian organization that provides essential and life-saving support to people regardless of their race, religion, gender, and cultural values or background.
He said the NGO has earlier supported the Madina MP to supply some medical equipment to the Municipal Directorate of Health with the sole aim of bringing hope where it is needed most and supporting communities where there is extreme poverty as a result of conflict.
Mr. Farouk said that even though Madina for that matter, Ghana is not classified as a conflict zone that merits their immediate intervention, the peculiar needs of some communities in Ghana fall within their objectives, hence the need to support Madina and other similar constituencies in the country.
He however called on the government to review the port duties covering donor agencies’ shipments of goods to be able to import things that would help support the country as the government alone could not do it all.
Mr. Kean Adjei Appiah, the Municipal Director of Education, who received the books on behalf of all the schools, expressed gratitude to the MP and the NGO for their special intervention.
He said the support is timely as pupils are being encouraged to read and improve upon their skills, emphasizing that, the books would be very useful to the Directorates and appealed to other donors and philanthropists to emulate the same to boost quality education in the Municipality.
Some of the teachers and pupils who were present to receive the distributed books on behalf of their schools also thanked the MP for his foresight to uplift reading skills among pupils in the area.
A total of 2305 boxes of assorted books, containing over 23,500 single books, mostly specialized books from KG to Class six were supplied to cover all 45 basic schools in the constituency and some selected private schools.
