Life for Relief and Development Donates K-12 books to 45 Schools in Madina
LIFE for Reliefs and Development, a United States of America (USA) based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), with the vision to help improve reading in basic schools across the country, has donated 25,000 books to 45 basic schools in the La-Nkwantang Municipal Assembly, as part of its educational literacy project.
The goal of the project is to ensure that every child in basic school reads at least one storybook a term to boost their reading skills.
The Country Director of Life for Relief and Development, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, presented the 25,000 books to the Member of Parliament for Madina for distribution to the schools at a brief ceremony held at the PRESEC school at Legon in Accra.
The lead sponsor of the donation was the Life for Relief and Development in the USA with a country Directorate in Ghana responsible for West Africa.
At least, over 40,000 pupils from public and some selected private basic schools are expected to benefit from the books.
Mr. Ibrahim said the child reading project seeks to support the government to improve Reading and Writing, among basic school pupils in the country.
He stressed that, as part of its objectives, Life for Relief and Development would extend similar donations to other needy basic schools in partnership with stakeholders to help pupils in basic schools develop better skills in reading and writing.
According to him, though Madina, and for that matter, Ghana is not classified as a conflict zone that merits their immediate intervention, the peculiar needs of some communities in the country fall within their objectives, hence the need to support Madina and other similar constituencies.
He added that his outfit would continue to reach out to places where humanitarian services are needed most to support, education, health, and water.
Nevertheless, he bemoaned the cost of importing relief items into the country and appealed to the government to exempt import duties at the Ports for donor organizations to help support development, especially deprived communities and conflict zones.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Life for Relief and Development, Sahani Ibn Yunus said the NGO is a Humanitarian organization that provides essential and life-saving support to people regardless of their race, religion, gender, and cultural values or background.
According to him, the organization has earlier supported the Madina MP to supply some medical equipment to the Municipal Directorate of Health with the sole aim of bringing hope where it is needed most and supporting communities where there is extreme poverty as a result of conflict.
The MP for Madina, Hon Francis Sosu, who received the books for distribution to the schools, commended Life or Relief and Development for the gesture; and affirmed that he will continue to partner with the organization to extend other needy projects within his jurisdiction.
He said, “As a Member Of Parliament I have committed to the noble cause of empowering minds and enriching lives through human capital development. This is why in the last two and half years I have invested in education, mentorship, and lifelong learning opportunities.”
The MP also expressed appreciation to the Municipal Directorate of Education, Heads of schools, and their teaching staff across the constituency for their hard work and reassured them that he would work for their interest so far he remained their MP.
Mr. Kean Adjei Appiah, the Municipal Director of Education, expressed gratitude to the MP and Life for Relief and Development for their special intervention and promised to ensure that the schools put the books to good use to achieve the purpose of the initiative.
Some of the teachers and pupils who were present to receive the distributed books on behalf of their schools also thanked the MP for his foresight to uplift reading skills among pupils in the area.
A total of 2305 boxes of assorted books, containing over 23,500 single books, mostly specialized books from KG to Class six were supplied to cover all 45 basic schools in the constituency and some selected private schools.
