GJA Prez paid Unannounced Visit to Parliamentary Press Corps
Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), on Monday, December 11, 2023, paid a surprise visit to the Ghana’s Parliamentary Press Corps to familiarize with them.
He seized the moment to commend members of the Parliamentary Press Corps for their dedicated effort to promote democracy.
Mr Dwumfour, who assumed the GJA presidency in June 2022,
expressed his commitment to improving their working conditions.
While interacting with the PPC members, Mr Dwumfour reassured the Journalists of his commitment to enhancing the overall conditions of service for journalists and creating an enabling environment for their work.
“This is one of the numerous visits; this is not the first and it won’t be the last. We promised that upon assumption, we are going to work together with journalists and press corps to make sure they get what is due to them, and work is discharged in an enabling environment. We came here on a working day to see how they are being catered for,” Dwumfour stated.
The media consultant and Head of Corporate Affairs at the Tobinco Group of Companies emphasized the importance of direct engagement with journalists. He encouraged the executives of the parliamentary press corps to ensure their members enrol in the GJA and highlighted the various benefits, including scholarships, capacity-building workshops, and other opportunities designed to enrich journalists’ skills.
He was accompanied by Mr Gabriel Bosompem, a Senior Journalist and member of the National Media Commission (NMC).
Dwumfour’s victory in the GJA presidential election marked a turning point, as he triumphed over notable competitors such as the Editor of the Ghanaian Times and former General Secretary of the GJA, Dave Agbenu, and Communications Consultant at the Speaker’s Office Gayheart Mensah.
On his part, the Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps, Simon Agianab commended the President of the GJA for recognizing the contribution of the parliamentary press corps to Ghana’s parliamentary democracy.
He also responded to an invitation by the GJA for PPC members to join the umbrella body saying that was a laudable initiative which will be attended to by the executive body.
He said even though most members of the PPC are not part of the GJA, Mr Dwumfour still found time to campaign with members during his run for the Presidency of the GJA.
Mr Agianab who is also the Managing News Editor of the Accra Times, thanked the GJA President for the visit and extended the appreciation of the PPC for his “attempt to add us onto the umbrella of the Ghanaian journalism fraternity.”
