Samreboi Community to get Drinking Water in 2024 First Quarter-Minister
Residents of Samreboi community within the Amenfi West Constituency will have opportunity to supply of fresh drinking water by the Small Town Water Supply System (STWSS) under the Community water Ghana Water Company Limited, the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Dr Freda Prempreh assured.
According to the Minister, construction of a Small Town Water Supply System for the Samreboi community is part of the Priority Projects planned by Community Water and Sanitation Agency in 2624 subject to the availability of funds.
The gave the assurance when Member of Parliament for Amenfi West, Hon Eric Afful posed a question to the Minister on the floor of Parliament on Friday, December 165 2023.
Hon Afful wanted to know the plans the government through the Ministry have to extend drinking water to supply the Samreboi community.
“Mr. Speaker, I rise to ask the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources what plans the Ministry has to extend the Community Water Programme to Samreboi community in the Amenfi West Constituency”, the MP quizzed the sector minister.
In response the sector minister, Freda Prempreh said, Samreboi town has a projected population as at 2023 of 17,876.
Currently, she said, there is a water supply facility in the community that serves only the staff bungalow of the Samartex Timber & Plywood Company Limited and not the entire community.
The Minister said Samreboi is part of a priority planned intervention projects for the construction of a Small Town Water Supply System in communities, emphasizing that, “the design will be carried out within the first quarter of 2024 in readiness for procurement and construction once funds are available.”
But Hon Afful told EXPRESSNEWSGHANA after the proceeding that access to drinking water in Samreboi remained a challenged.
Hon Afful said the absence of drinkable water posed serious health implication to his constituents as most of them relied on unwholesome water from rivers and streams for domestic use.
He explained that even though there are few functional boreholes, most residents, both old and young women and children treks for a number of kilometres to fetch water from local streams.
He said he would hold the Minister and the government to their words and pose the same question if by the target set by the Minister failed to materialized, saying, “that has been this government attitude by promising with confidence but delivered none.”
