SONA2024: Akufo-Addo/Bawumia Good at Promises, Bad in Delivery –Adjei Mensah
Ranking member of the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament, Hon Isaac Adjei Mensah has chided President Akuf0-Addo and his Vice, Dr Mohamudu Bawumia for continued promises but delivered none.
According to him, since 2017, President Akufo-Addo and his government had promised good roads with mouthwatering slogans of “Year of Roads” but failed to deliver as many communities in the country remained in deplorable roads cross the country.
He urged took Ghanaians not to expect new roads this year under the Akufo-Addo administration, arguing that the government’s priority is to leverage the International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout to fairly stabilise the country’s economy that has been crippled for seven years
Adjei Mensah said this in his contribution to the 2024 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in parliament, Accra.
The MP for Wassa East Constituency said contended that the budgetary allocation for roads is nothing good to write home about. Stressing that, “The roads sector is very bad, yet this government lacks maintenance culture and it is unable to fix the roads the erstwhile NDC government left behind.”
The Legislator went on to say the government has failed to maintain existing roads which has led to most highways deteriorating across the country, a situation he attributed to poor priority and non-compliance of the laws of Ghana.
“This government has received much revenue than any government in the history of this country but if you as President Akufo-Addo to tell you what his administration has done with the huge funds and loans, he would not be able to tell you,” he added.
Mr Adjei Mensah said the government is not willing to rehabilitate roads anytime soon, and that “the IMF funds will be pumped into the economy but not roads.”
“If the government does not misuse the IMF cash, the economy can be stabilised but talking of roads, all major flagship projects have been suspended,” he stated.
He also berated the President for failing to address corruption and its related issues while addressing the country on the state of the nation last Tuesday.
During the State of the Nation Address in parliament, the president, who pledged to tackle corruption drastically before assuming power, did not touch on what his government has done about corruption in the past year.
Critics have chastised him for failing to talk about such a serious issue that has been hindering development in the country for decades.
But in his contribution, Adjei Mensah contended d that it was disappointing that Akufo-Addo failed to author an on the canker that has caused the country billions under his administration.
“I was thinking that he [Akufo-Addo] was going to say something about corruption because his administration has been dirtied by corruption in the history of this country, we have never registered the level of corruption [like we see] under Nana Akufo-Addo,” the MP stated.
“I think Nana Akufo-Addo has failed; I think this government has failed and they should apologise to the people,” he said.
