Lands Minister Samuel Abdulai Jinapor has called for increased awareness and education in border communities to maintain peaceful relationships between Ghana and its neighbors.

In a statement to Parliament on African Border Day, June 12, 2024, he emphasized the importance of involving border communities in decision-making processes to foster ownership and responsibility.

Jinapor highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach involving all stakeholders to ensure continued peace and development along Ghana’s boundaries. He commended the Ghana Boundary Commission for promoting Ghana’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and stressed the importance of education in promoting intercultural dialogue, tolerance, and mutual understanding.

He urged cross-border exchanges, economic cooperation, and joint development projects to overcome barriers and create stronger border communities. Empowering youth in border communities, he said, can create a formidable defense against violence and extremism.

Jinapor emphasized the need to educate citizens, particularly in border communities, about the importance of land and maritime boundaries and their role in safeguarding international boundaries.

He called for the engagement and empowerment of border communities, Traditional Authorities, Border Security Committees, Municipal and District Assemblies, and other stakeholders to create awareness of the significance of boundaries and their role in border governance.

The African Border Day commemorates the African Union Border Programme and the Niamey Convention, which aim to promote integrated border governance and cross-border cooperation.
