Life for Relief and Development, a United State of America based Non-governmental Organisation, on Monday, June 17, 2024, distributed parcels of meat to some Muslim communities of Korkormu and Tinkong within the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region as part of this year’s Eid-al- Adha celebrations.

The distribution of the meat was in fulfilment of its objectives to reach out to the vulnerable and the underprivileged in society, to put a smile on the faces of over 200 Muslim residents of the two communities.

Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Country Director of Life for Relief and Development for West Africa, said the distribution is several of its kind and formed part of the organisation aims.

The distribution of the meat, he explained is not limited to Korkormu and Tinkong, but would be extended to Madina, Sakura, Alajo and other communities where Life for Relief and Development have its needy target beneficiaries as the festival of sacrifices known in Islam as “ Udhiyah Qurban” and is  celebrated in the form of sacrifice by slaughtering of cows.

According to Alhaji Farouk Ibrahim, the slaughtering of cows must be performed bearing in mind Islamic guidelines and rules in order to reach out to people in the various communities regardless of their economic status.

“This is an integral part of Eid al-Adha,” said Farouk Ibrahim, explaining the roots of the tradition in the story of Abraham and Ishmael and as it is re-enacted.

He said a total of Eleven cows and 12 Sheep were slaughtered by Life for Relief and Development to celebrate the Eid al-Adha with the Muslims of Korkormu,  Tinkong,  Madina, Sakura, Alajo and other communities and urged the society to help the needy especially the disadvantaged to enable them live dignified lives.

Mr. Sahabi Ibn Yunus, the Public Relation Officer (PRO) of Life for Relief and Development said the distribution of the meat is an annual event of the organisation and it is targeted at the deprived Muslim communities and orphans who ordinarily could not afford meat to participate in the celebration.

He said that Eid al-Adha blesses us with three days of celebration, offering a meaningful opportunity to extend our blessings to the poor and needy. He stressed that a singular sacrifice can provide crucial relief and nourishment to families in need.

Mr Ibn Yunus said, the joy of Eid is overshadowed by the struggle for food security and one Qurbani can bring much-needed relief, offering nutritious meat to those who need it most, hence “the need to spread joy and nourishment by sharing our sacrifice.”

The Organisation, he said, would continue to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by disasters and empowers extremely poor and vulnerable communities, orphans and the vulnerable.

The Imams of Korkormu and Tinkong respectively commended the Life for Relief and Development and its team for their annual gesture, which they said would put smiles on the faces of the beneficiaries.

“This celebration said is about caring and sharing so if Life for Relief and Development come to undertake Allah’s duty as prescribed by the Quran, they must be commended,” First Deputy Imam for Korkormu, Mohammed Anagli said.

They offer prayers for continued Allah intervention in their work and for grace to remember them in their efforts to bring comfort to their families in times of such celebration.

Eid al-Adha is celebrated in memory of when God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son as a test of obedience that Abraham passed, his reward being that a ram, not his son, fulfilled the intended sacrifice.

Muslims recall this scriptural story in a particular way on Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of the Sacrifice. Eid al-Adha is among the holiest days in Islam, its date coinciding with those of hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca that millions undertake each year.

Locally, adherents celebrate with prayer and festive celebration, notably in community gatherings that are expected to draw thousands to the Islamic prayers.
