Alexander Kwabena Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader of Parliament, has called on his majority caucus colleagues to exercise restraint in their public discourse about who the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, would pick as his running mate for the 2024 presidential elections.

According to him, no decision has been made yet concerning the position, and he stressed the importance of maintaining respect and unity within the party.

“We’ve all heard matters regarding a running mate to complement our ticket, but no decision has been made yet. The flagbearer of the party has the confidence of the party, and I believe that he would use the structures of the party to come up with certain decisions that he has for us,” he stated.

Speaking to the parliamentary press on Thursday, June 27, following some scathing comments by colleagues on the purported choice of Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh as running mate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the need to avoid denigrating one another and to recognize that no individual is perfect.

“There is no perfect person in this world. There is no perfect character in this world. None of us can tick every box, so let’s be careful how we describe each other, how we say things about our colleagues, and how we approach things,” he added.

Afenyo-Markin called for respect towards the party’s leadership and urged members to refrain from using language that could cause divisiveness in the party.

“The flagbearer of the party has the confidence of the party, and I believe that he would use the structures of the party to come up with certain decisions that he has for us. So, let us wait and at least respect the leadership of the party. We should not go out of our way to denigrate ourselves or describe ourselves in a manner that will be unacceptable,” he advised.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s comments are in apparent reference to a statement made by the MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, who indicated that Dr. Opoku Prempeh is not his preference for Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, explaining that Dr. Opoku Prempeh does not have what he looks for in an NPP flagbearer’s running mate
