MP for Ledzokuku Drags Minister to Parliament over Poor Roads in Constituency
The Member of Parliament for the Ledzokuku constituency, Benjamin Narteh Ayiku, has brought the Minister for Roads and Highways before parliament over the deteriorating road network within the Ledzokuku enclave, which is negatively affecting transportation.
According to him, the inner roads within Ledzokuku, particularly in the areas of Camp 2, Okpoigorno, Demo, Agblezan, and Sea Lady, are in very poor condition, making transportation challenging.
Ayiku raised this issue when he posed a question to the sector Minister, Francis Asenso-Boakye, in parliament on Thursday, June 27, 2024.
“Mr. Speaker, I rise to ask the Minister for Roads and Highways the steps the Ministry is taking to construct inner road networks in the following communities in Ledzokuku: (i) Camp 2 (ii) Demo (iii) Okpoigorno (iv) Agblezan (v) Sea Lady,” Ayiku asked on the floor of parliament.
In response, the Minister, Asenso-Boakye, stated that the government, through its implementing agency (Department of Urban Roads), is executing the “Rehabilitation of Alloway and 6th Avenue Extension and Demo Roads (4.30km)” project, which includes Camp 2.
According to the Minister, the project comprises the construction of drainage and roadworks on the Demo Road and the Camp 2 (Akututso) Road, aiming to improve connectivity for commuters between Teshie Bush Road and the Teshie Link Road. He mentioned, “The contractor commenced work in September 2020. However, he vacated the site in December 2020, and all attempts to get the contractor back to the site have proven futile.”
The Minister explained that the current progress stands at less than 10%, and the Department of Urban Roads has recommended the project to the Ministry of Roads and Highways for termination.
Further, Asenso-Boakye mentioned that the Ministry is executing the “Rehabilitation of Boundary Roads, Okpoi-Gonno (9.8km) – Lot 2” project. This project is currently ongoing within the Okpoi Gonno electoral area and is intended to improve accessibility for residents of Nungua, Teshie, and Okpoi-Gonno localities. The project is at 38.05% physical completion, and the contractor is currently on-site.
Regarding the Agblezan road, the Minister said the Ministry, through the Department of Urban Roads, is executing the “Rehabilitation of Palso Vardes Drive, Mayfair Road, and Christ Impact Church Area Roads-Tse Ado (5.54km)” project. This project includes the construction of drainage and roadworks on Penny Road, Obediben/Mayfair Road, and some local link roads in the Agblezan Electoral area within the Municipality. The focus of works is to improve connectivity within the enclave located between the Teshie Link Road, the New Spintex Road, and the Burma Camp Roads. The contractor is on-site, and works progress stands at 70%.
Concerning the Sea Lady road, the Minister explained that the project is part of roads that the Department of Urban Roads is executing under the “Partial Reconstruction in Accra.” It comprises the construction of drainage and roadworks in the Sea Lady, Alloway, Malik, and Baptist areas. The focus of works is to improve connectivity within the beneficiary communities, and work so far is at 12% physical completion. He noted, “Works have stalled currently, and the contractor has vacated the site.”
Nonetheless, the Minister assured that efforts to get the contractor back on site to complete the outstanding works have proven futile, and necessary recommendations for termination would be undertaken. He further assured that the outstanding works on the project would be repackaged for consideration under the 2025 budget.
