MP for Wenchi Recounts Achievements in Education Over Four Years
In fulfillment of his campaign promises to prioritize education during his tenure, the Member of Parliament for Wenchi in the Bono Region, Hon. Seidu Haruna, has highlighted the significant achievements made in the education sector over the past three and a half years since his election on December 7, 2020.
With just five months remaining until the general elections, Hon. Seidu Haruna asserts that no MP in Wenchi’s parliamentary history has done more for education than he has. Speaking in an exclusive interview with EXPRESSNEWSGHANA, the MP detailed the improvements and interventions that have transformed the educational landscape in his constituency.
Improvements in Basic Education
Prior to his election, many community schools in Wenchi lacked essential teaching and learning materials. However, through Hon. Haruna’s efforts, these schools now have a conducive environment for academic purposes. He explained that before his tenure, most basic schools, especially in farming communities, lacked desks and other materials. His hard work has resulted in the provision of mono desks to many schools, ensuring effective teaching and learning.
Financial Support for Tertiary Students
Hon. Haruna has also provided financial assistance to needy tertiary students within the constituency, fulfilling his campaign promise to support the less privileged. He emphasized that education should be a right, not a privilege, and that his support aims to break down financial barriers hindering access to higher education. Over 700 tertiary students have benefited from his financial support policy, which he views as a vital investment in building human resources.
Provision of ICT Resources
Recognizing the importance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in modern education, Hon. Haruna has supplied computers to various schools. Beneficiaries include Wenchi Secondary School, Wenchi SDA School, Al-Faruq Teacher Training Institute, and several basic schools. This initiative aims to foster an environment where students can immerse themselves in the digital realm.
Additional Educational Interventions
To reduce the burden on students who travel long distances to school, Hon. Haruna launched the “One Village JHS Student, One Bicycle” program, providing bicycles to children from remote communities. He has also supplied roofing sheets to schools damaged by storms, presented laptops to the teachers’ association, constructed a 6-unit classroom pavilion at Bepotrim, organized mock examinations for Junior High School students, and distributed mathematical sets.
Commitment to Educational Development
Hon. Seidu Haruna’s unwavering commitment to education has led to significant strides in access, quality, and relevance, making Wenchi a beacon of progress in the region. He assured his constituents of his continued dedication to supporting education with available resources, both from the MPs Common Fund and his personal contributions.
