Winneba to Host ECOWAS Parliament for the Fourth Time
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for Effutu in the Central Region, has announced that Winneba, the capital of his constituency, is fully prepared to host Members of the ECOWAS Parliament for the fourth time.
Mr Afenyo-Markin, who is the Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, gave this assurance after Members agreed that Winneba should be the venue for the delocalized joint committee meetings from Monday, July 29 to Saturday, August 3, 2024.
“Honorable colleagues, just a short message of gratitude. As you may be aware, there is an upcoming joint delocalized committee meeting scheduled for Ghana between the 29th of July and the 3rd of August. The Bureau has graciously granted Ghana’s request to host the program in Winneba, in the Central Region, outside the capital city.
“The Committee Chairs and members of these two committees have graciously agreed to come to Winneba. As the Member of Parliament for the Constituency, I extend a very big thank you to you for this honor. I also assure you that the city will be delighted to welcome you, and you can rest assured that all arrangements will be in place for us to have a productive deliberation,” Afenyo-Markin noted in his capacity as the third Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament.
The meeting, under the theme “Plastic Waste Management: Challenges and Prospects in Implementing Community Policies,” is expected to feature Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin, Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, as the Special Guest of Honour at the Opening Ceremony on July 29.
According to the ECOWAS Parliament, one of the key aims of the meeting is to inform and sensitize Members on the strategies and mechanisms developed by ECOWAS for the environmentally sound management of plastic waste in the West African region.
The meeting is expected to make recommendations to the ECOWAS Commission on how to improve legislation within the community to ensure coordinated implementation of environmental management policies and integrated management plans for chemicals and hazardous waste.
The delocalized meetings of the Committees are always organized in Member States to enhance the visibility of the ECOWAS Parliament and its activities, and to discuss issues and programs related to the development and integration process of ECOWAS.
