The Deputy Minister of Education and MP for Kwadaso, Professor Kingsley Nyarko, has accused the Minority of attempting to shield John Dramani Mahama from the debate with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

This follows the Minority caucus in Parliament inviting Dr. Bawumia to participate in the 2024 mid-year budget review debate after he called for a debate with the NDC flagbearer.

In an interview with EXPRESSNEWSGHANA, Prof. Nyarko stated that the NPP has competent MPs ready to engage in the debate with their NDC counterparts and would not need Dr Bawumia to defeat them.

“I think the Minority are just being mischievous by inviting the Vice President to join the debate in Parliament. Lining up about seven of their MPs to debate the Vice President shows they are afraid and want to hide the truth.

“They want to shield the Presidential candidate, former President John Mahama. They should stop shielding him. It is a fact, this is the Minority’s way of shielding Mahama from debating with Dr. Bawumia,” Prof Nyarko said.

Prof. Nyarko questioned the unusual setup of having several MPs debate one individual on the floor of the house. “Why will they select people and line them up to debate one person on the floor of the house? Based on the set criteria, you know every debate has a rule. From the letter by the Minority to the Vice President, it’s quite obvious that the Vice President may not have to bother.”

The Deputy Education Minister urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer to accept a presidential debate challenge from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr. Bawumia has challenged Mr. Mahama to a debate ahead of the December polls, but the 2024 Mahama Campaign Team has declined the offer, arguing that there is nothing left to debate about the economy and insisting that Mahama does not need a debate to convey his message.

Prof. Nyarko believes this is an opportunity for the two candidates to justify to Ghanaians why they should be elected as President to manage the country’s resources.

“I think for his own good, Mahama should accept the invitation by Dr. Bawumia for a debate. We don’t want politics of insults, name-calling, insinuations, and all. If indeed he’s determined to come back and wants to tell Ghanaians that he’s a changed man, I’m calling on him to accept the opportunity.

“This is not about being a former President; he is contesting as a Presidential candidate and will be questioned based on him being a candidate and not a former President,” he added.
