MP for Krowor Commends Speaker Bagbin for Commitment to Gender Equity
The Member of Parliament for Krowor in the Greater Accra Region, Hon. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has commended the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for his dedication to gender equity in Ghana.
She attributed the successful passage of the Affirmative Action Bill into law to Speaker Bagbin’s unwavering support for gender equity.
Hon. Momo Lartey expressed her appreciation following the bill’s passage by Parliament on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. “Anyone who has closely followed this bill knows that its success is largely due to the Speaker.
“The Right Honourable Speaker has demonstrated to this eighth parliament and the entire Ghanaian population that he doesn’t just talk about gender equity but actively supports it. His commitment to women’s leadership and ensuring proper measures to correct societal imbalances is commendable,” she said.
She praised Speaker Bagbin for his leadership and perseverance, especially during challenging times.
“We cannot thank Mr. Speaker enough. Previous speakers have come and gone, but he has been steadfast, guiding us through the process. Yesterday was no exception; he ensured all corrections and amendments were made, leading to the bill’s successful passage. We owe this achievement to God and Mr. Speaker’s leadership,” Hon. Momo Lartey added.
Expressing her excitement over the bill’s passage, Naa Momo Lartey said, “Every well-meaning Ghanaian who has been advocating for the Affirmative Action Bill to become law should be thrilled. Today, by the grace of God and thanks to the Speaker’s leadership, the Affirmative Action Bill is now law. This achievement, over 13 years in the making, allows us to proudly declare our progress in gender equity at international conferences.”
She emphasized the importance of implementing the law effectively, noting that Ghana often faces challenges in enforcing laws. “Now, our focus should be on the operationalization of this law. One of our national weaknesses is having many laws but facing challenges in their implementation. Given what we have endured to get this bill passed, I hope its implementation will be smooth,” she stated.
Hon. Momo Lartey also commended all MPs, especially the members of the Legal and Constitutional, and Gender and Social Protection Committees, for their dedication during the bill’s consideration.
“I congratulate everyone involved and am confident the ministry will ensure proper implementation. I also want to thank my committee, the agenda committee, for their hard work. It has been stressful, but seeing the bill passed is rewarding. Let’s now focus on the specifics of what the law aims to address,” she said.
