Affirmative Action Bill Passage to Accelerate Women’s Empowerment-says Coalition
The passage of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Bill marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of gender equality and women’s empowerment in Ghana, according to the Coalition of Affirmative Action.
In a press statement following the Bill’s approval by Parliament, the Coalition emphasized that the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, which has been in development for years, aims to address longstanding gender disparities in Ghanaian society.
This new law enshrines measures for affirmative action in both the public and private sectors, ensuring the progressive achievement of gender balance across all sectors as per the targets set in the legislation.
The Coalition views the passage of this law as a testament to the persistent efforts and dedication of a diverse group of organizations and individuals who have been advocating for this cause since the first draft in 2011.
Through providing technical resources to the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, as well as lobbying, advocacy, and raising awareness, the Coalition has tirelessly campaigned for this landmark legislation.
Mrs. Sheila Minkah-Premo Esq., the Convener of the Coalition, expressed her gratitude at Parliament House following the Bill’s passage.
“This is a truly historic moment for Ghana. We are grateful for this law, which acknowledges the marginalization of women in Ghana and implements measures to address gender imbalance and its effects on our society,” she said.
The Coalition extended gratitude to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, the Minister of Gender, Hon. Dakoa Newman, and the past and present Chairpersons of the Parliamentary Committee on Gender and Children, Hon. Patricia Appiagyei and Hon. Helen Adjoa Ntoso and all parliamentarians who supported the Bill and worked tirelessly for its passage.
It also recognized the role of the Convener, Coordinator, and members of the Steering Committee of the Coalition, as well as the Technical Team members who helped draft the Bill and past Ministers of Gender who have supported the Bill over the years.
The Coalition also extended special appreciation to the host organization, ABANTU for Development, along with countless other organizations and individuals who have supported this important cause.
The statement added that, as they celebrate this victory, the Coalition remains committed to advancing gender equality in Ghana and ensuring women’s integration into key decision-making processes.
It however called on the President, Nana Akufo-Addo to promptly assent to the Bill and urged all Ghanaians to join in the mission to implement the law towards achieving gender parity by 2030.
This, they believe, will foster sustainable development through a more just and equitable society.
