Parliament Fire under Control – Regional Fire Commander
The Regional Commander for the Greater Accra Region of the Fire Service, ACFO1 Roberta Aggrey-Ghanson, has confirmed that the fire incident at Parliament on Tuesday, August 27, is under control.
Speaking to the Parliamentary Press Corps, ACFO1 Aggrey-Ghanson stated that the fire service received a distress call at 9:45 am and responded promptly.
“Our appliance was on the scene within less than five minutes, and we have been able to confine the fire to one room, which appears to be a storeroom.”
She assured that the situation is calm and under control, with no flames visible.
However, the area is still smoky, making it difficult to assess the situation fully.
ACFO1 Aggrey-Ghanson confirmed that three tenders have been deployed, and the fire service is relying on Parliament’s water source to refill their appliances.
Reinforcements have also been deployed due to the initial intensity of the smoke.
When asked about the safety of the building for staff to work, ACFO1 Aggrey-Ghanson stated that it is not safe yet, as the fire needs to be fully extinguished before the area can be declared safe.
A post-incident briefing is expected to take place once the situation is fully under control.
