The Majority Women’s Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has expressed strong condemnation of the recent comments made by Mr. John Dumelo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, against Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the incumbent Member of Parliament and Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources.

During a program organized by TV3 in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Mr. Dumelo made an unfounded and harmful accusation, implying that Hon. Alhassan was involved in the death of her late husband to facilitate her election to Parliament.

The Majority Women’s Caucus has described these remarks as not only baseless but also a direct attack on Hon. Alhassan’s character and a broader insult to all women in leadership.

At a press briefing in Parliament on Thursday, August 29, 2024, Deputy Majority Leader and MP for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei, emphasized Lydia Alhassan’s exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to her constituents and the nation.

She highlighted Hon. Alhassan’s significant contributions to the legislative process and her dedicated service as Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, which have earned her widespread respect and admiration.

The Caucus condemned Mr. Dumelo’s statements as a departure from Ghanaian cultural values, particularly the respect and empathy extended to women and widows.

The Majority Women’s Caucus stands firmly with Hon. Lydia Alhassan as she seeks legal redress and supports her decision to pursue the matter in court, where Mr. Dumelo will be required to substantiate his claims.

The Caucus calls on all political actors and the public to engage in respectful and truthful discourse, warning against personal attacks that threaten to undermine the democratic process. They urge a focus on meaningful debates around ideas and policies, which are essential for the progress of Ghana’s democracy.
