Dear Nyaaba,

For many people, their abiding religion is ‘love your neighbour as yourself and do unto him as you will want done unto you’. Without doubt, people know and recite this, but what they do in real life is another matter, better left uninvestigated. The anecdotal evidence that confronts anyone who cares or dares to ask, will leave such one in a shock, at the very least.
I am not usually one to pontificate but the circumstances leave me no option, the individualism that plagues our lives off line has been replicated, faithfully, online. With disastrous repercussions. That is why I come to you today:
In today’s world of instant sharing, social media has made it effortless to post opinions, jokes, and personal updates. But what happens when we don’t think about how our posts affect others? The answer is chilling: we risk inflicting real harm. Now, more than ever, we need to practice “neighbourly behaviour online”, being mindful of the consequences of our words and actions, and treating others with the same care and consideration we would in real life. Here’s why thinking twice before you post can make all the difference:
1. Words Can Wound
A thoughtless comment or post can have deep, unintended consequences. Whether it’s body-shaming, mocking someone’s lifestyle, or dismissing their struggles, these seemingly harmless actions can cause emotional distress, leading to anxiety, depression, or even suicidal thoughts. Taking a moment to reflect on how your words might be received can spare others unnecessary pain.
2. The Hidden Toll of Cyberbullying
The internet provides a sense of distance that can make people more brazen with their words. Cyberbullying thrives in this space, often under the guise of “just joking” or “expressing opinions.” But these attacks can shatter someone’s self-worth and leave lasting emotional scars. When we think twice before posting, we help prevent our words from becoming weapons.
3. Creating an Online Community of Respect
Social media reflects who we are, and just like in real life, our online behaviour shapes the kind of community we want to live in. When we engage thoughtfully, we foster an atmosphere of respect and empathy. This encourages more meaningful connections and reminds others that their feelings and experiences matter, making the online world a more compassionate place.
4. Lifting People Up, Not Tearing Them Down Our posts have the power to uplift as much as they do to harm.

A kind comment, a supportive message, or even simply acknowledging someone’s struggles can make a world of difference. Thoughtful engagement online can create a ripple effect of positivity that reaches beyond just the screen.
5. Setting a Standard of Kindness
Many young people look to social media for validation and guidance, and what they see can shape their behavior. By modeling kindness, respect, and empathy, we set a standard that others will follow. Our actions can create a healthier, more inclusive digital environment, one where people can feel safe and supported rather than judged or attacked.
In a world where words are weapons, and posts can pierce the heart, it’s crucial to pause and think before we hit “send.” Consider the next person and the potential impact of what you share. You may not see the damage right away, but it could be devastating. Your words could break them.
Pray ancestor mine, that we first resolve to love our neighbor as ourselves and then commit to doing so off and online.

Your worried descendant
