A senior member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Abdul-Sheriff Nasiru, has declared that the party will strongly oppose any form of intimidation during the upcoming 2024 general elections.

In an interview with ExpressNewsGhana, Alhaji Sheriff stated that the party will no longer tolerate the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) alleged manipulation of state institutions, including the judiciary and security agencies, to suppress Ghanaians or NDC members.

Alhaji Sheriff, a former NDC National Executive, said NPP has overstepped its boundaries, warning that the NDC will not allow Ghanaians to be coerced or their votes manipulated.

He emphasized that the NDC is prepared to confront any attempts to interfere with the electoral process, whether legally or physically.

“Since immemorial, NPP are always using the judiciary anytime they are in power, but this time round we will not allow anyone to use the judiciary or their influence to intimidate us or other Ghanaians. We can no longer be victims of peace,” Sheriff declared.

He recounted instances of alleged NPP-led intimidation of NDC members after the year 2000 general elections, when former President John Kuffour took office and during President Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Sheriff noted that despite opportunities to retaliate during the presidencies of John Evans Atta Mills and John Mahama, the NDC chose not to engage in such tactics, warning that the NPP will face the full resistance of the NDC if such practices continue.

“You remember, when we (NDC) left power in the year 200, then John Kuffour came, they arrested, intimidated and jailed some of our members. And when we had the opportunity to do the same after the 2008 elections under John Evans Atta, he did not revenge, and he did not manipulate the judiciary neither did he use state security to harass members of the NPP. President John Mahama also followed the same trend after President Mills’ death. But today, President Akufo-Addo and his people want to tell us that they are in charge, they can do whatever they want. They can stop the Speaker from performing his duty. They gagged every institution to do what they want. But let me warn them, they will not be there forever, the next NDC government will be a different government. They must know that their cup is full, and they will drink from it,” Alhaji Sheriff added.

Sheriff also criticized the government’s handling of recent controversies in parliament, particularly Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to expel four MPs for constitutional breaches.

He accused the NPP of manipulating state institutions to serve its interests and cautioned that the NPP’s “cup is full.”

He further commented on the poor state of the nation’s economy, criticizing the Akufo-Addo administration for mismanaging resources, leading to deepened economic, social, and security challenges.

Sheriff claimed that the government has been dishonest about the severity of the country’s economic situation, with rising debt, high inflation, and escalating food and commodity prices.

He reiterated the NDC’s commitment to safeguarding democracy and ensuring a free and fair election. He also supported former President John Mahama’s proposal for a government of national unity, which he believes will help stabilize the country, improve security, and attract investments.

“The NDC is going into the 2024 elections to win,” Sheriff concluded, calling on party members to remain firm and resolute in defending the Constitution.
