The Holy Spirit Cathedral branch of the Catholic Organization for Social and Religious Advancement (COSRA) is set to embark on an ambitious renewal journey following a transformative meeting with its founder, Very Rev. Msgr. Jonathan Ayikai Ankrah, at his residence in Dansoman in Accra last Sunday.

“This visit has been extraordinarily timely and fruitful,” remarked the President of the group, Godwin Nkegbe. “Msgr. Ankrah’s wisdom and strategic vision have given us a clear roadmap for revitalization. His insights come at a crucial moment when we’re seeking to strengthen our relevance and impact.”

During the warmly received gathering, Msgr. Ankrah, who founded COSRA 53 years ago, outlined a comprehensive three-pronged strategy to reinvigorate the organization. Central to his vision was the establishment of key partnerships with prominent Catholic scholars and leaders. The founder specifically endorsed collaboration with Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Michael K. Mensah of the University of Ghana, Legon, a distinguished scripture scholar. “Fr. Mensah’s deep scholarly understanding of scripture will provide members with rich, contemporary interpretations of biblical teachings,” Msgr. Ankrah explained.

This partnership aims to enhance members’ biblical literacy and its practical application in daily life. Similarly, Very Rev. Fr. Raymond Osei-Tutu, known for his expertise in marriage counseling, has been recommended to lead family life initiatives. “In these challenging times, strong families are crucial to our community’s fabric,” Msgr. Ankrah noted. “Fr. Osei-Tutu’s guidance will be invaluable in strengthening marriages and family bonds.”

A groundbreaking aspect of Msgr. Ankrah’s vision includes the establishment of inter-parish competitions focused on scriptural knowledge and marriage enrichment. “These competitions should extend beyond the Accra Archdiocese,” Msgr. Ankrah proposed, “creating a network of engaged COSRA members across different parishes and Arch/Dioceses.”

The competitive programmes will include scripture quiz competitions between parish branches, marriage and family life knowledge contests, cultural and social engagement activities, as well as inter-parish sports and recreational events. This ambitious strategy will foster a sense of community and friendly rivalry, while also encouraging members to deepen their understanding of scripture and family life.

To implement these new initiatives, the organization plans to roll out a multifaceted approach. This will include monthly scripture study sessions with Fr. Mensah, quarterly marriage enrichment workshops led by Fr. Osei-Tutu, regular community engagement programmes, monthly general meetings on first Sunday. Importantly, the inter-parish competitive events will be scheduled throughout the ensuing year, creating a calendar of engaging activities for members across different parishes and Arch/Dioceses.

Recognizing the need to adapt to contemporary communication methods, COSRA will also establish a robust digital presence. “While maintaining our traditional values, we must embrace modern methods of engagement,” President Nkegbe explained. The organization plans to launch social media platforms and a website to facilitate inter-parish communication and programme coordination, ensuring that its message and activities reach a wider audience, including younger generations.

“These initiatives represent more than just programming changes,” Msgr. Ankrah emphasized. “They represent a renewal of our founding vision adapted for today’s challenges.” The organization plans to begin implementing these changes next year, with a follow-up meeting scheduled for December to finalize the 2025 calendar. President Nkegbe concluded, “Msgr. Ankrah’s guidance has given us both practical steps and inspiring vision. We’re not just planning activities; we’re building a stronger, more vibrant COSRA that will attract and engage members across generations.”
