The 2nd General Assembly of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL) concluded on October 27, 2024, in Accra, Ghana, with Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament re-elected as Chair.

Known for his dedication to democratic principles and parliamentary reform, his re-election underscores broad support for his leadership as African legislative heads gathered to advance strategic priorities for the continent.

During the two-day assembly, delegates adopted a new CoSPAL constitution and elected leadership positions.

Ghana’s Speaker, respected for his extensive experience and commitment to legislative integrity, will continue as Chair, joined by five regional Vice-Chairs and a Secretary-General.

On the second day, discussions focused on updates to the CoSPAL Secretariat, the Host Country Agreement, and administrative issues like membership subscriptions.

Delegates also explored ways to elevate CoSPAL’s profile and strengthen connections with inter-parliamentary bodies and the African Union.

The assembly concluded with a communiqué and plans for the next General Assembly, setting a unified course for legislative progress across Africa.
