Afenyo-Markin the Right Man to Lead NPP Minority for 9th Parliament-Joe Wise
The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, has strongly endorsed Effutu Member of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to continue as the Minority Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 9th Parliament. His endorsement comes ahead of an impending leadership decision for the NPP Minority Caucus.
Speaking to the media in Parliament on Wednesday, December 18, Mr. Osei Owusu underscored the importance of experience and resilience in selecting the right leader for the caucus.
While he clarified that his support was personal and unofficial, the seasoned legislator, drawing from his extensive tenure in the House, stressed the value of longevity in leadership.
“As someone who has worked full-time in Parliament for many years, I believe in the power of experience,” he stated. “Longevity brings both experience and clarity.”
He referenced the example of former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who successfully transitioned from Minority Leader to Majority Leader.
“When Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was the Minority Leader, he stood out. But that did not happen by accident. He started as a Chief Whip and worked his way up. Experience is key,” Osei Owusu explained.
The First Deputy Speaker highlighted Afenyo-Markin’s experience as a critical asset, stating that no other current MP has the same level of leadership experience.
“If you ask me, let Afenyo-Markin continue. He is the only one with the experience that will be beneficial moving forward,” he said.
He further pointed out that while Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu had similar experience, he is retiring from Parliament.
Acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead for the NPP Minority, Osei Owusu emphasized the need for a leader who is not only strategic but also combative.
“Given our current situation, we need a leader who can stand strong. Our voices must be heard loudly, both inside and outside the chamber. We may have only 91 votes, but our influence can still be felt,” he said, stressing the qualities of strength and resilience needed in the next Minority Leader.
This endorsement adds to the growing support for Afenyo-Markin’s leadership within the NPP as the party prepares for the next parliamentary term.
