Speaker Bagbin Receives Prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in Africa Public Sector
Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament and the longest-serving Member of Parliament in Ghana’s Fourth Republic, has been honored with the prestigious Humanitarian Lifetime Achievement Award at the African Public Sector Conference and Awards (APSCA).
This recognition highlights his exceptional contributions to governance, legislative excellence, and leadership over more than three decades.
The award was presented to Speaker Bagbin at Parliament House on Friday, December 20, by Carol Opata, Executive Director of Instinct Wave West Africa.
In her speech, Opata praised Mr. Bagbin’s unwavering dedication to public service.
“For over three decades, you have been a steadfast pillar in the legislative process, navigating the complexities of governance with exceptional acumen and a commitment to the needs of the people,” she remarked.
She also highlighted his roles as Chair of key parliamentary committees and his tenure as Minister for Health and Minister for Water Resources, Works, and Housing. Opata emphasized that his leadership exemplifies the democratic principles that Ghana stands for.
In his acceptance speech, Speaker Bagbin expressed deep gratitude for the award, saying, “This recognition is truly humbling. I didn’t know that such a distinguished institution was observing the work we do here in Ghana.”
He thanked APSCA for their commitment to honoring excellence and for presenting the award in Ghana, despite the original ceremony being held in Botswana, which he could not attend due to parliamentary duties.
Opata also provided an overview of APSCA’s mission to transform Africa’s public sector. She emphasized APSCA’s role as a platform for leaders to exchange ideas, share insights, and foster innovation in governance.
She praised Rt. Hon. Bagbin for his contributions to international parliamentary organizations, such as the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), noting that his influence extends beyond Ghana and serves as an inspiration for governance and development across Africa.
The Humanitarian Lifetime Achievement Award not only recognizes Speaker Bagbin’s past achievements but also his ongoing commitment to good governance and public service.
Speaker Bagbin concluded his remarks by emphasizing Africa’s potential for greatness through collective effort, stating, “Together, we can build a blessed continent called Africa. I dedicate this award to my colleagues and all those who tirelessly work to advance governance.”
