Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, Esq., born in   May 1978 in Winneba, Central Region, Ghana, is a distinguished barrister, solicitor, and seasoned politician.

As a prominent advocate at the Superior Courts of Ghana, Afenyo-Markin’s legal expertise and political acumen make him a key figure in the country’s governance.

Educational Background:

Afenyo-Markin’s academic journey is marked by a commitment to excellence. He earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Buckingham (2003–2006) and proceeded to the Ghana School of Law, where he was called to the Bar in 2009.

Additionally, he holds an M.A. in International Politics and Security Studies from the University of Bradford (2009–2010). His legal and political expertise is further bolstered by specialized studies in Organisational Leadership and International Politics from prestigious institutions such as Oxford University.

Career and Professional Engagements:

In his early career, Afenyo-Markin worked as a Principal Postal Officer at Ghana Post (1999–2003) and later served as Director at Excel Courier Ghana Limited (2004–2011).

He had his professional legal education at the Ghana School of Law and was subsequently called to the Ghanaian Bar. A member of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association and International Bar Association.

A seasoned practitioner in Financial Crime, Security, and Human Rights law, Afenyo-Markin’s legal acumen is matched by his scholarly contributions to peace and security discourse, evident in his published works and teaching engagements.

Afenyo-Markin is well-regarded for his roles in both the private sector and public service. He is renowned for his pivotal positions as a former Board Chairman of Ghana Water Company Limited, Ghana Road Fund, and currently of Electricity Company of Ghana Limited, demonstrating a commitment to infrastructural development and public service.

Political Career:

Afenyo-Markin’s political journey began in 2012 when he contested the Effutu parliamentary seat as a candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and won against the incumbent Mike Allen Hammah of the NDC. In parliament, Afenyo-Markin served on several important parliamentary committees, including Appointments Committee, Business Committee, Finance Committee, Standing Orders Committee, Defence and Interior Committee and Committee of Selection.

He was previously the Deputy Majority Leader before being promoted to Majority Leader in February 2024 as part of a reshuffle by President Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP leadership. In 2021, Afenyo-Markin was sworn in as a member of the ECOWAS Parliament, demonstrating his influence on the regional stage.

Key Projects and Initiatives:

As the Member of Parliament for Effutu, Afenyo-Markin has championed numerous developmental projects aimed at improving education, infrastructure, and cultural heritage in his constituency. Some notable initiatives include:

One Teacher-One Laptop: Launched in 2018, this initiative seeks to provide laptops to teachers in Effutu to enhance teaching and learning. By 2021, over 1,000 laptops had been distributed to teachers in both private and public schools in the constituency.

The Effutu Dream:  Initiated in 2020, this project aims to promote Effutuman culture, fostering a sense of community and branding the constituency to attract tourism and investment. It also focuses on youth empowerment through capacity-building programs.

14 Libraries Project: To promote reading and education, Afenyo-Markin spearheaded the construction of 14 libraries across Effutu, providing young people with better access to learning resources.

Royal Palm Tree Project: In 2020, Afenyo-Markin planted Royal Palm trees in Winneba, contributing to the beautification and environmental sustainability of the constituency

Personal Life
